Looking back on the year helps us reflect on achievements and consider what’s coming up next. The eCampus office is pleased to highlight a few of the accomplishments and advancements in online and blended teaching and learning at the University of Nebraska at Kearney this year. In collaboration with many others on campus, including faculty and staff from multiple colleges and offices, we’ve taken big strides in extending UNK’s impact and reach in 2018.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSU.S. News World Report badge for online programs

Nationally, UNK ranked #25 for Best Online Graduate Programs—a ranking from U.S. News and World Report that was 10 spots higher than the previous year.

The blended MBA program can now be completed entirely at a distance through virtual meeting times, expanding the program’s reach statewide and beyond.

Eleven new online or blended programs launched this year, bringing the total number of eCampus program offerings at UNK to over 75. New programs launched in 2018 include:

  • Bachelor of General Studies
  • Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.S.Ed., blended)
  • School Counseling, Elementary PK-6 or Secondary 7-12 (M.S.Ed., blended)
  • Curriculum and Instruction: Montessori – Early Childhood (M.A.E.)
  • Curriculum and Instruction: Montessori – Elementary I (M.A.E.)
  • Curriculum and Instruction: School Librarian (M.A.E.)
  • History: Public History (M.A.)
  • Entrepreneurship minor
  • International Business minor
  • Montessori graduate coursework program
  • Montessori undergraduate coursework program

ONLINE ENROLLMENTS

Distance education online only enrollment saw a growth of 7.2%, 134 students, for Fall 2017-18. Students taking online only classes also saw tremendous growth this year with a 27% increase. Nearly 60% of all UNK students take at least one online course during their time at UNK.

TECHNOLOGY AND TRAINING

eCampus Student Orientation - The instructional designers revamped this orientation in the Canvas Learning Management System to further support students in finding the information they need. Orientation modules include best practices for being a successful online learner, UNK technology resources and tutorials, and UNK support services available to eCampus students.

Lightboard Studio Recording - Many faculty members have started utilizing our new one-touch recording system in our lightboard studio. The lightboard is a glass markerboard that uses light to allow faculty to create interactive visuals in real-time while recording. This is a quick and easy way to communicate technical subjects, equations, and sketches. Everything is set up for you; all you need to bring is a USB flash drive to store your lecture.

Workshops by Jill Schiefelbein, The Dynamic Communicator - In September, eCampus hosted an  eLuncheon and workshops by faculty-turned-entrepreneur Jill Schiefelbein. As both a pioneer in the online education space and an expert in business communication, she presented workshops to UNK faculty that focused on creating effective video content for online courses, teaching Gen Z students, giving feedback that drives better student performance, and many other topics. View the archived eLuncheon presentation, “Using Video to Teach and Reach: Making Your Course Content Work for Instruction and Influence,” or attend another eCampus event featuring Jill Schiefelbein in April 2019.

eWorkshops for Faculty - Instructional designers at eCampus presented seven eWorkshops in 2018. View the archived eWorkshops on the following topics:

  • Creating Successful Discussion
  • Reviewing and Revising: Improving your course With a Purpose
  • Doing More with Less
  • ePortfolio: Using online portfolios for formative and summative assessments
  • The Good the Bad and the Educational: How to Create Quality Videos
  • Blending in: Designing and Teaching Blended Courses
