The name change reflects the program’s applicability to a wider range of prospective students—those who may not already be in the field of student affairs but who want to make a difference for students in a college setting. The online master’s degree program helps professionals gain a better understanding of college students and what they need to thrive in higher education.

Dr. Matthew Mims, associate professor and program director, says the program strengthens communication and counseling/psychology expertise so professionals can get to the heart of students’ struggles. Higher education student affairs professionals identify not only the problems and solutions related to student success, but also the reasons behind the struggles and any gaps in services or resources the student needs to succeed.

Student affairs encompasses many topics within a higher education setting, from residence life and campus recreation, to student health, disability services, advising, admissions, career services, and many other areas.  Providing students with actively engaged and knowledgeable professionals to support them greatly improves their college experience, which often leads to increased student retention or enrollments for an institution.

UNK’s M.S.Ed. in Higher Education Student Affairs is a 36-credit-hour online graduate program that opens the door to careers at community colleges, public and private colleges, and universities.
