All organizations have managers at every level to provide the necessary direction to help the business succeed. No matter what the goals of an organization, solving problems and adapting to change requires familiarity with fundamental managerial functions. As a UNK management major you may begin your career in an entry level position in accounting, finance, human resources, production, or marketing. Managers must be skilled in identifying opportunities, using a firm's resources, organizing and controlling information, selecting and motivating people, making decisions, achieving defined objectives, and evaluating results. Students in UNK's Management Emphasis study concepts in these areas and develop the skills necessary to engage effectively in these activities and to apply this knowledge to various types of organizations-world wide, in your geographic location, or in your home town. UNK students may apply their knowledge in the small corner store, accounting firms, retirement homes, hospitals, manufacturing firms, government agencies, universities, or a business to business type organizations such as RJR Nabisco, or students may choose to start their own business. Upon completing the program, students are prepared for positions as management trainee, supervisor, administrator, or other entry level positions.
After proving your abilities, the opportunities for advancement are unlimited. During a career in management, one's responsibility can grow from the job of entry-level manager, to department manager, and eventually to division manager or even to CEO (Chief Executive Officer). As in most fields of work, upon completion of the degree, the entry-level manager or trainee usually experiences an initial time of on-the-job training. For example, a manager trainee might spend time in every department of an organization learning the business inside and out. Then he or she may be assigned to a specific department and begin to have responsibility for the performance of an area or department of the organization. The advancement in a managerial position depends on training, talent for working with people, and effort. Working with people is a primary focus of management; consequently, good written and oral communications skills are essential to success.
