Making friends.

How will you help my son or daughter adjust to college life?
Our focus is to welcome your son or daughter into the UNK community from day one. We offer a University Foundations course, as well as other courses that help freshmen enhance such skills as study habits, time management, college life issues, and academic preparedness.

Where can my son or daughter go to make new friends?
Really, anywhere on campus. At UNK, your son or daughter will become involved in a diverse variety of student organizations and participate in exciting intercollegiate athletic programs, intramural events, residence hall activities, and much more. And at every stage of their UNK experience, they will make new friends with other students from across the nation and around the world. The recently renovated Nebraskan Student Union--offering a food court, convenience store, coffee shop, meeting rooms, student offices, and a 24-hour computer lab--is also an ideal place to meet new people and make friends.

How can my son or daughter get involved in student clubs?
Our students go out of their way to involve new students in a wide variety of clubs and organizations. Staff assistance—as well as a complete listing and contact information—for student groups are in the Student Union. But it’s very likely your son or daughter will meet someone in a class, residence hall, cafeteria, or elsewhere, who will help them get involved.

Where will my son or daughter live, and who will they room with?
All UNK students live on campus during their first year. Our campus features 10 traditional residence halls, two Greek living complexes, and an apartment-style housing complex. All rooms are cable-ready, furnished, have telephones, and offer easy access to residence hall computer labs, lounges, study areas, and recreational spaces. Specific roommates can be requested, and all incoming freshmen receive their roommate information by June 1. Learn more about campus housing.

Academic life.

How will you help my son or daughter adjust to university-level academics?
Our biggest priority at UNK is to position your son or daughter to achieve their goals. We offer free tutoring services for most freshman and sophomore courses, and provide additional guidance through our Writing Center, as well as through our Learning Strategies Office where advisors offer guidance on study habits, hints on how to better work with instructors, and more.

What kind of academic support services do you provide?
Through our Academic Success office, your son or daughter will have access to Student Support Services (SSS), a federally funded retention program focused on helping students achieve all they can with their academic work. Learn more about the services offered at Academic Success.

What is your student/faculty ratio?
We have an impressive 16:1 student/faculty ratio, which means that your son or daughter will get an uncommon amount of one-to-one guidance and attention from professors. Small classes taught by full-time faculty has always been a hallmark at UNK.

Do I have access to my son or daughter’s academic records?
Federal law requires that in order to gain access to your son or daughter’s academic records at UNK, you must first get his or her written consent. This is a legal requirement at all colleges and universities in the country.

What will you do to help my son or daughter choose a major?
Many of our incoming students are undecided about their majors. As a public university, we have the advantage of being able to offer our students a comprehensive curriculum. This allows them to explore a wide variety of fields in order to discover their individual interests. At the same time, our Office of Career Services offers a wealth of career assessments, occupational descriptions, career trend information, graduate/professional school directories, alumni contacts, and other career information that is directly linked to specific majors and the personality types likely to excel in them.

How do students with disabilities get program or campus accommodations at UNK?
Any student with physical, learning, or psychological disabilities gets one-to-one guidance from Dr. Gail Zeller at the Learning Strategies Office. Together, they will discuss the various ways UNK can meet that student’s individual needs. Learn more about the Learning Strategies Office.

How can my son or daughter receive counseling if needed?
All UNK students have access to free counseling. We provide Licensed Professional Counselors on staff, as well as counseling interns. Sessions are scheduled for one hour each, and the duration of counseling is up to both the counselor and the student.

Finances and outcomes.

What financial aid options are there for my son or daughter?
More than two-thirds of UNK students receive some form of financial assistance. This aid comes in the form of student loans, scholarships, grants, and work-study. Learn more about financial aid options.

How do we go about applying for financial aid?
To begin the process, your son or daughter will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can be accessed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov to determine their eligibility for government assistance. UNK’s FAFSA school code is 002551. Next you will need to complete UNK’s information forms. You and your parents (if applicable) also must submit signed copies of your most recent federal tax returns. Learn more about applying for aid.

Will my son or daughter be eligible for financial aid?
Access to need-based financial aid is determined when your son or daughter demonstrates a financial gap between what your family can afford, and what our tuition and costs are. If you don’t qualify for need-based aid from UNK, you may still be eligible for state or federal aid. To determine your eligibility for need-based aid you must apply on time with all required forms and documents.

How do we know our son or daughter will be able to find a job after graduation?
The first thing your son or daughter must realize is that it’s never too early to start the career planning process. Many of our students begin working with the Office of Career Services early in their first year on the UNK campus. This will help them match their talents and interests with the most logical major to start down their desired career path. The UNK curriculum also integrates a variety of experiential learning opportunities such as internships and real-world research projects. These are excellent opportunities for your son or daughter to gain invaluable work experience and connect to great careers even before they graduate. Not surprisingly, UNK graduates have been achieving success at the highest levels for more than a 100 years.

What career services programs do you offer?
We offer resume critiques, occupational information, practice interviews, career fairs, job listings, on-campus employer interviews, and more. Learn more about the Office of Career Services.
