Dr. La Duke was raised in Michigan, Illinois, and Texas where he graduated from high school. He attended Texas Tech University and received a Bachelors degree in Zoology and a Masters degree in Botany. He completed a Ph.D. in Botany at The Ohio State University.
He began his academic career at the University of North Dakota where he moved through the ranks to Professor. He was Chair of Biology for two 3 year terms and Chair of Art for one year during that time.
He served in the College of Arts and Sciences office as an Associate Dean for 4 years and one semester as Associate Vice President of Research and Economic Development before coming to the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He has published in national and international journals, described two new species of plants, and has recently had three treatments accepted for the Flora of North America.
