Small Ensembles

Our department offers various smaller ensembles for students to be a part of. Some of these ensembles require an audition, some are faculty selected, some are open to all students, and some have community member involvement. Please click below to learn more about the various small ensembles we have to offer.

Chamber Orchestra

The UNK Chamber Orchestra is a student string chamber orchestra that consists of seven to eighteen string players. The ensemble provides opportunities for string students to advance their knowledge and performance skills in string orchestra literature. The repertoire performed focuses on the standard string ensemble works throughout the centuries. The chamber orchestra rehearses on Monday and Wednesday from 2:30pm-3:20pm, and performs in various venues each semester.

Thornton String Quartet

Formed during the fall semester of 2004, the Thornton String Quartet is UNK's principal scholarship chamber ensemble and has represented UNK in various performance venues throughout Nebraska. Literature performed includes the standard string quartet repertoire of the eighteenth century to the present. Selected through competitive auditions, each of the quartet members receives a Thornton String Quartet Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 annually. Members of the quartet rehearse twice a week and perform in the Kearney Symphony Orchestra which rehearses one evening per week. Each semester, the quartet performs in recitals and in other community/university service settings.
