Mathematics Placement Policy

Mathematics placement is done with either the ACT mathematics score or with the UNK Mathematics placement test. We do not use any other test for placement. The placement test determines the appropriate entry level mathematics course. The placement test  does not provide credit by examination. The test must be taken on campus and it is available at no cost. The score is recorded and it may not be taken twice. To schedule a placement test, please phone the mathematics office (308 865 8531). Our placement policy is:
  • Students who have never enrolled in a UNK mathematics or statistics course are eligible to take the placement test.

  • Students who are enrolled in their initial UNK mathematics or statistics course may take the placement test prior to the first class day of the term. All other students are not eligible to take the placement test.

  •  We recommend that students take the placement test before their second term at UNK.
  • Students who did not take the ACT exam and who have not earned credit for a university level mathematics
course must either (i) enroll in MATH 90 or (ii) take the placement exam before enrolling in a mathematics course.

The following table shows entry level course options using the ACT mathematics score and high school course work for placement.
