UNK's Mathematics Placement Policy

Placement into the proper entry-level mathematics course is crucial for success in mathematics. At UNK mathematics
placement is done with either the ACT mathematics score or with the UNK Mathematics Department Placement test.
Students who have not taken a UNK mathematics course may take our placement test. The test is available at no
cost.  To schedule a placement test, please phone the mathematics office (308 865 8531). The test must be taken
on campus. A brief description of our placement policy follows.

Freshmen who have taken one year or less of algebra
  • Students with no high school algebra or an ACT mathematics score of 16 or less must enroll in MATH 90.
  • Students with less than two years of high school algebra must enroll in MATH 101.

Transfer students

  • Transfer students who have no mathematics transfer credit and no ACT score, must take the UNK Mathematics Department Placement test before registering for a mathematics class.
  • Transfer students who have earned transfer credit for a mathematics course or who have an ACT score, should be advised as usual.
