Census Congressional Districts: 
     1990 Census of Population and Housing: Congressional Districts of the United States Summary Tape File 1D, Summary Tape File 3D (100% Data-STF1D and Sample Data-STF3D)

 


1.   What is it?

       A statistical CD-ROM containing data about the congressional districts that were defined in 1992. The data comes from the U.S. 1990 Census of Population and Housing. This disc contains two data sets: STF 1D or what is called "100% data," which means answers to questions that appeared on all census forms and STF 3D, "sample" data.  STF 1D has information about people and housing units at the state, Congressional district, county, and place level.

2.   Who produces it?

       U.S. Commerce Department, Census Bureau.

3. Are there guides to using it?

       There is a technical documentation manual. Call number: C 3. 282: C 76/doc.

4.    Is it updated?

       Additional data from the 1990 Census was on other CD's and in paper. See STF1A and STF3A and call number below for paper reports.

5.    Can the CD-ROM be checked out?

       Yes.

6.   Sudoc number (disc's call number in Calvin T. Ryan Library):

       C 3. 282: CD 90-1D-3D

7.   Is there a paper equivalent in Calvin T. Ryan Library?

       Yes:  C3.223/20:1990 CPH-4-(numbers). Individual printed report for each state. For earlier censuses, ask for assistance at the Government Documents Dept. office.

8.   Tricks:

        USING IT:

         The format is similar to the Census STF1A CD-ROMs.
         Move the cursor to select a geographical level. The technical documentation manual defines the various geographical terms.
         Use the arrow keys to select a state. Press Enter. Specify an area within the state. Press Enter.
         You may now see a "General Profile" of information, or select from many categories of information, such as data by race, by age, etc. The technical documentation manual defines the various categories.
         Once you have arrived at the numerical data you can press B to "Browse"; that is, to compare data with other places. ("Browse" does not work in "General Profiles".)

       HELP:

         None available on screen.

       PRINTING:

         Press P.
         If you want to print the data on the screen, press Enter when the cursor is over "Complete Table for This Area" If you want to print what you saw under Browse, move the cursor to "Single Item for Several Areas" and press Enter.
         Move cursor to "Print table to printer." Press Enter.

       COPYING (DOWNLOADING):

         To copy in screen format:
            Place a portable storage device in drive.
            When you arrive at the data you want to copy, press P.
            If you want to copy the data on the screen, press Enter when the cursor is over "Complete Table..."
            If you want to copy what you saw under Browse, move the cursor to "Single Item..." and press Enter.
            Press Enter with cursor over "Print table to file."
            When the screen says "File Name C:\ " erase the C:\ and type (drive letter):\smith, where smith is the name you give the file. Press Enter.

         To copy as data:
            Place a portable storage devide in drive.
            When you arrive at the data you want to copy, press C.
            Follow directions on the screen.

       GETTING OUT:

         Press End.
         Type Y.
