Census EEO Data: 1990 Census of Population and Housing: Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) File
1. What is it?
Two statistical CD-ROMs, containing data from the U.S. 1990 Census of Population and Housing. This set contains what is called "sample data," meaning that the information is based on the fifteen percent of households who received the census "long form".
The purpose of these discs is to describe the "pool" of people holding a particular occupation in a given location, as well as people who have a particular educational attainment. This allows an employer to see if a job advertisement is drawing as many minorities as would be statistically probable.
The discs can serve other purposes too: providing statistics on how many lawyers or canning workers there are in a specific county, for example. There is information about jobholders at the national, state, county, place, and Metropolitan Statistical Area levels. There is information about such subjects as ancestry, language, place of work, means of transportation, educational attainment, income, number of bedrooms, rent, and plumbing facilities. (See also the Census PL94-171, Block Statistics, STF1C, and STF3A and STF3C Urbanized Area CD-ROMs.)
2. Who produces it?
U.S. Commerce Department, Census Bureau.
3. Are there guides to using it?
There is a technical documentation manual. Call number: C 3. 283: Eq 2/doc.
4. Is it updated?
Other data about racial minorities and special populations is in the CD's above and in printed reports. Newer (2000) information is online: http://www.census.gov/eeo2000/index.html
5. Can the CD-ROM's be checked out?
