American Housing Survey
1. What is it?
This is a statistical CD-ROM containing information from the American Housing Survey, which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau every two years. Information is collected about the number of housing units available, their size and quantity, how many people are living in them, etc. Information is also available on minority householders, elderly householders, quality of the neighborhoods, amount of rent or mortgage payment, etc.
Statistics are available on a nation-wide basis and by four large geographical regions.

U.S. Census Bureau.
3. Are there guides to using it?
No.
4. Is it updated?
Every two years. Newer years are online: http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/housing/ahs/ahs.html
5. Can the CD-ROM be checked out?
Yes.

GETTING IN:
Type the correct number at menu. You will then have a choice of three topics:
* National Core: information about housing units at the national level
* Supplement: information about occupied units, arranged by the type of occupier
* Regional Core: information divided into Northeast, Midwest, South and West regions
Select the file you wish to examine.
USING IT:
The program will offer you a series of choices. Use the up and down arrows to reach your selection and press Enter.
Eventually you will arrive at a display of statistics.
Use the directional arrows to move down the page and to see numbers that lie beyond the right edge of the screen.
HELP:
No on-screen help is available.
PRINTING:
Type P twice.
Press Enter.
COPYING (DOWNLOADING):
Place a portable storage device in drive.
Type P.
Type F.
The program asks you for a file name. Erase C:\ and type (drive letter):\smith where smith is the name you want to give to the file.
GETTING OUT:
Press the End key.
