Agricultural Census 1987: 1987 Census of Agriculture on CD-ROM, Volume 1, Geographical Area Series, State Data File, County Data File
1. What is it?
A statistical CD-ROM containing information about farms throughout the United States. Data covering the 1978, 1982, and 1987 censuses is arranged by state and county, with 1987 United States totals. Examples of topics include how many farms there are in a county, how much wheat they grow, and whether the amount increased or decreased in the last decade. This handout explains the basic software which displays data that looks like the printed reports. A more complex software, EXTRACT, is also available.

2. Who produces it?
U.S. Commerce Department, Census Bureau.
3. Are there guides to using it?
There is a technical documentation manual; call number C 3. 277: Ag 8/987/doc.
4. Is it updated?
The original disc has been updated by a second version which is the one you are using. A new Census of Agriculture is done every five years, in years ending in "2" and "7". See below for printed reports.
5. Can the CD-ROM be checked out?
Yes.

7. Is there a paper equivalent in Calvin T. Ryan Library?
Yes, there are individual reports for all states under Sudocs number C 3. 31/4: 987/v. 1/(part no.). The Documents Department has also received printed reports from the 1992 Census of Agriculture. GETTING IN:
Press appropriate number at menu.
When asked what type of agricultural data you want, type S.
USING IT:
Choose "County Profile" to get information about an individual county or
"Data Items by County" to compare counties in the state.
Select a state (or U. S. totals) by using the arrow keys. Then select a county.
Select a table with the arrow keys.
For an explanation of the data codes, press F5 key to see the "LEGEND"

Press P (Enter)
COPYING (DOWNLOADING):
Not available with this software.
GETTING OUT:
Press Esc several times. Menu will appear.
