Recreation, Outdoor, and Event Management

The Recreation, Park and Tourism Management program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is designed to prepare students for careers in organizations serving the public with recreation programming. City recreation programs, hospital or institution programs, YM & YWCAs, camp operations, and local, state, and national parks are examples of agencies or organizations that hire Recreation, Park and Tourism Management majors.

The program consists of three specialization options for students:

Coursework is varied but includes foundations of recreation and parks, camp leadership, computer applications, program development, facility planning, management of programs, therapeutic recreation for special populations, and research. Also included are additional courses for each area of specialization.

Each specialization culminates in an internship experience individualized as much as possible to the interests and needs of the student. We are capable of placing interns at various locations in Nebraska and across the United States. Completion of an internship is possibly a student's most important academic endeavor as national data indicate internship work leads to employment for 80 percent of the interns. We have placed recreation interns at a variety of sites: Nebraska Games and Parks Commission; YMCA of Reno-Sparks, Nevada; adult daycare in Denver; Cornhusker State Games; Kearney Parks and Recreation; and Grand Canyon National Park.

A recreation and parks management minor is available for those who desire a major in another field.
