Seeking Extraordinary Potential

We are always on the lookout for exceptional talent.

At UNK, we offer a variety of innovative programs to nurture extraordinary talent. Consider, for example, our four-year Honors Program that complements all academic majors at UNK. Offering smaller, intense, and discussion-driven classes, interdisciplinary seminars, collaborative research projects, independent study projects, graduate-level classes and more, the Honors Program is specifically designed for the most academically gifted and motivated of our students. If admitted, you are required to complete 24 credit hours of Honors courses structured as follows:

  • Five three-credit hour courses from the General Studies requirements, ideally at least one Honors General Studies course per semester during the first 4 or 5 semesters.
  • At least nine hours of 300- to 400-level Honors Options courses chosen from your major field of study in your junior and senior years. The last three hours of these nine, called a Senior Study, usually involves an independent study project directed by a faculty mentor.

Do I qualify?
Admission to the Honors Program at UNK is by invitation only. Students are selected based on outstanding academic and creative accomplishments and a proven record of leadership. The minimum qualifications required for the Honors Program are:

  • First-time freshmen—an ACT score of 26 and above, a high school transcript that ranks them in the top 25 percent of their class, a written essay, and two academic letters of recommendation.
  • Current students—12 completed credits hours, a grade point average of at least 3.5, a written essay, and a successful interview with the Honors Program Committee.

 Live the Honors Program
Choose to live in Stout Hall, our Honors Hall, as an Honors Student and get ready for a distinctive residential experience which may include study groups, leadership opportunities, seminars, discussions, social activities, and more. The Honors community created in these Honors Halls is a very supportive environment which brings ambitious and motivated students of all majors together.

Does this program offer financial aid?
If invited to join the Honors Program, you have a good chance of receiving financial aid through scholarships such as:

  • The Omaha World-Herald/Kearney Hub scholarship—awarded to two incoming Honors Program students every year, this scholarship covers all your tuition expenses through the Board of Regents Scholarship and all your room and board and book costs through a variety of other funding sources.
  • Additional scholarships—these include additional tuition scholarships and endowed scholarships that are offered (and renewed) based on the availability of funds.
