The First
Year Program (FYP) office at UNK is charged with developing and implementing a
coordinated program to foster the success of all first year students. The
office works with many other academic and student affairs departments to offer
multi-faceted opportunities for students to learn how to take responsibility
for their own education, to develop a sense of belonging to the UNK community
and develop a sense of Loper identity. Some of the experiences that are
offered to first year students include:
- New
Student Orientation during the summer when students register for classes and
learn more about UNK.
- Blue
and Gold Welcome Week activities that encourage students to become familiar
with academic opportunities and expectations as well as getting involved in the
UNK community.
- Programming
during the student’s first two semesters includes opportunities to enroll in a
1 or 3 credit hour class to assist in adjusting to the demands of college
life. These classes are designed to include small group
discussions, facilitate interaction with a peer mentor and various campus
leaders, while also incorporating the use technology to assist a First Year
student’s success at UNK.
- The
FYP office also facilitates programming in the Residence Halls to address
issues that many students face during their introduction to college life.
These programs will be a partnership with on-campus content experts to help
introduce new students to individuals on campus who are interested in their
personal success at UNK. Program topics areas may include: how to
communicate with your faculty, working with your academic advisor, finances and
college life, time management and many other potential adjustment topics.
