Douglas R. Tillman (Assistant Professor)

Is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology at the University of Nebraska Kearney.  Areas of interest include counselor training and
supervision, spirituality, wellness, group, and solution focused counseling to individuals, couples, children, and families.

Dr. Tillman began his career path in 1999 when he graduated from UNK with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.  He then entered the law enforcement field where he worked for the Kearney Police Department and Perkins County Sheriff’s Office for a combined five years.  He more deeply entered the helping profession when he began working with troubled adolescents at the I Believe in Me Ranch, and as a Child Protection and Safety Worker for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.  During these experiences, Dr. Tillman was introduced to the counseling profession and began taking classes with UNK in community counseling, now clinical mental health.  Dr. Tillman completed this program in 2007 and began work as a counselor in the Kearney community for Mid Plains Center’s Multi-Systemic Therapy and in private practice with Family Resources

Soon after graduation from UNK with his Master’s degree in community counseling, Dr. Tillman began wondering what the next steps might be in the counseling field.  In the fall of 2008, he began pursuing a doctorate in counselor education with the University of South Dakota (USD).  For the next two years, Dr. Tillman traveled from Kearney to Vermillion weekly in pursuit of this doctorate.  During this time, he also began teaching classes as an adjunct instructor for UNK in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology.  In the fall of 2011, Dr. Tillman completed his qualitative dissertation on how counselors develop confidence in working with clients in the area of spirituality and/or religion, and graduated that December.
