Business & FSID Internships

"Successful careers develop...when people are prepared for opportunities."

˜Harvard Business Review

The College of Business & Technology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney provides the opportunity for business students to obtain hands-on experience in their chosen fields through business internships. While internships are not new in education, in today's competitive job market, it is important for students to gain every advantage possible before embarking on a job search. One outstanding advantage is the internship.

Internships allow students to apply the knowledge and theory they have learned in the classroom to be the professional workplace. More and more, a question that pops up during job interviews is "do you have any relevant work experience?" Internships allow students to gain their valuable applied work experience during college, while at the same time providing the opportunity to make connections in the professional fields they may be considering as career paths. There are many benefits to the business of having internship programs as well. Student interns can increase productivity at a business by taking on projects, which frees up full-time employees to accomplish more creative tasks or those where expertise is required. College students also bring novel perspectives, fresh ideas, and specialized strengths and skill sets to the workplace. One of the biggest financial drains on businesses can be training new employees that don't end up working out because either they don't fit in with the company culture or they don't like their job. For this reason, many businesses use internship programs as a semester-long job interview, allowing them to more accurately assess potential candidates for full-time positions. Internships definitely are a win-win situation for both the student and the employer.
