ASO is committed to the retention of UNK students by providing resources to assist in achieving academic success and gaining access to key services at the University of Nebraska Kearney. We provide UNK students with opportunities to develop their academic potential.

Learning Commons

A collaborative service consisting of Peer Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, the Writing Center, La Mesa and Library support.

  • Writing Center
    Writing Center tutors assist UNK students, staff and faculty at any stage of the writing process. Walk-ins are accommodated as the appointment schedule allows.

  • Peer Tutoring
    Peer Tutors provide walk-in assistance for general studies classes with a focus on math, science, language and business. To get the most out of peer tutoring, students should seek assistance as early as possible.

  • La Mesa
    La Mesa is a unique opportunity using games and fun activities to enhance Spanish language skills. The La Mesa schedule varies from semester to semester, and is available on the website by the third week of classes.
  • Supplemental Instruction
    SI Leaders work directly with instructors to offer review sessions in selected general studies classes.

Learning Strategies

  • University Foundations classes
    This three-credit transition class is strongly recommended for first year and transfer students. Students learn how to approach new ideas, study effectively, perform better in class discussions and on tests, and become familiar with campus opportunities and resources.
  • Online Study Skills classes
    These one-credit, online classes are open to all students seeking to develop specific skill sets including study skills, time management, listening and note taking, test taking, reading improvement, and critical thinking. Each class takes five weeks to complete.
  • Success Coaching
    Almost anyone can benefit from success coaching! If you feel there is something preventing you from achieving academic success, we can assist. Success coaching is a great resource for modifying existing behaviors and exploring new areas for academic and personal growth.
