THE STRUCTURE OF THE GENERAL STUDIES PROGRAM

The UNK GS Program is a 45-hour requirement of all undergraduate students who plan on graduating with a baccalaureate degree. The GS Program is a distributed program with courses selected from a number of different categories and perspectives within each category. The outline of the GS Program categories and their respective perspectives is:

  1. ENGLISH LANGUAGE (9 hours)

  2. FOREIGN LANGUAGE (0 – 3 hours)
  3. FINE ARTS AND HUMANITIES (9 – 15 hours)
    1. Literary Perspectives
    2. Aesthetic Perspectives
    3. Historical Perspectives
    4. Philosophic Perspectives
     
  4. MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS, and COMPUTER SCIENCE) (3 - 6 hours)
    1. Mathematics/Statistics
    2. Computer Science
     
  5. NATURAL SCIENCES (7 – 15 hours)
    1. Biology
    2. Chemistry
    3. Geography and Earth Science
    4. Physics
     
  6. SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (9 – 15 hours)
    1. Economic Perspectives
    2. Social Perspectives
    3. Political Perspectives
    4. Geographical Perspectives
    5. Behavioral Perspectives
     
  7. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT (2 – 3 hours)

Objectives have been approved for each of the categories and perspectives within each category. A detailed listing of the student outcomes have been provided in Appendix 2.
