General Studies Courses:

  1. Social and Behavioral Perspective

    The General Studies course in this perspective is FSID 351 – Marriage and Family Relationships.

    The following objectives identified for General Studies are covered in FSID 351:

    1. Demonstrate an understanding of human experiences and be able to relate them to the present.
    2. Demonstrate the ability to understand the application of the empirical research methods used in the social sciences to understand individual behavior as well as the interrelationships among people.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend how social scientific concepts originate, are validated and refined within a variety of social science disciplines.
    4. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the strengths and limitations of the social sciences and the explanations they offer for contemporary life.

    Direct Measures 

    The General Studies objectives will be assessed as follows:

    A pre-test and post-test consisting of ten multiple choice questions will be administered to students enrolled in all sections of FSID 351 during fall semester of each academic year. The pre-test will be administered during week one or two of the semester and the post-test will be administered during the final week of the semester. The multiple choice questions are sub-scripted to indicate which General Studies objective is being measured. The assessment instrument is attached as Appendix A. Course faculty will report the results to the appropriate department person responsible for data analysis and report during spring semester.

    Indirect Measures 

    A Student Perceptions six item Likert scale survey will be administered to all students enrolled in all sections of FSID 351 during the last week of the fall semester. The items in the Likert scale address each of the four social and behavioral perspective goals. The assessment instrument is attached as Appendix B.
     

  2. Personal Development

    General Studies courses in this category include the following:

     

    • FSID 108 – Space for Family Living
    • FSID 110 – Introduction to Nutrition
    • FSID 151 – Human Sexual Behavior
    • FSID 160 – Personal Money Management

    FSID 108 – Space for Family Living

    The Interior Design objectives covered in FSID 108 include the following objectives identified for the General Studies Program:

    1. Demonstrate the ability to confront the complexities – physical, emotional, economic, and/or technological-of the contemporary world.
    2. Demonstrate the development of skills, behaviors and problem solving strategies necessary to prevail in the contemporary world.
       

    Direct Measures

    The General Studies objectives will be assessed as follows:

    A pre-test and post-test consisting of ten multiple choice questions will be administered to students enrolled in the one section of FSID 108 during fall semester of each academic year. The pre-test will be administered during week one or two of the semester and the post-test will be administered during the final week of the semester. The assessment instrument is attached as Appendix C. Course faculty will report the results to the appropriate department person responsible for data analysis and report during spring semester.

    Indirect Measures

  3. Timeline for assessment process

    All sections of all general studies courses will be assessed each fall semester. Data will be reported and analyzed during spring semester. Necessary revisions will be completed during spring semester. The assessment report and plan will be submitted by October 1st each year.
