- Writing Intensive Subcommittee:

***Peg Camp (Bicak) moved to approve the above recommendations as WI. Motion carried. The following course has all of the necessary information except for the syllabus. Eifler will request the syllabus from the instructor. Eifler suggested the Council approve course pending submission of the syllabus.
- ITEC 408 - Leadership in Business & Technology (Tuttle)
***Charlie Bicak (Envick) moved to approve the above course as WI pending the collection of the syllabus. Motion carried. The following course was denied for the WI designation:
- PSY 455 - Adolescent Psychology (Eifler would like to discuss the revision process with Krista Forrest.)
- NEW BUSINESS:
- Altering CD/WI Process (Eifler):
Eifler suggested altering the CD/WI review and approval process. Eifler suggested the review committee consist of two General Studies Council members, one specializing in CD and one in WI. In addition to the two GS members, Jenkins and Schipporeit would also serve on the committee. Eifler stated that Sonja Kropp has agreed to serve on the committee, as well as Jim German if necessary. Eifler suggested Don Envick to serve as the last GS member.
Jenkins suggested the council members visit with their College and get opinions on the proposed CD/WI approval process. Faculty involvement will be reduced in the new process.
The Council will discuss this issue in the fall.
- Miscellaneous:
Jenkins has some concerns about the word usage of "waiver". Jenkins is concerned that "waiver" may be viewed as a convenience, when waivers have never been issued on a convenience basis. However, when granting a waiver, Jenkins uses a course or a combination of courses that are equivalent to one that is CD/WI. Jenkins stated that the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc capstone courses are currently in place.
- OLD BUSINESS:
- Closure on Humanities Course Review:
Jenkins asked the Council to come to closure on the Humanities course review process.
***Charlie Bicak (Eifler) moved that a response be sent to the departments informing them that the courses have been reviewed and approved. Motion carried.
- JMC 100 Request:
Keith Terry requested that Jenkins provide him with additional information, beyond the concerns the Council had, as to why JMC 100 did not meet the Social Perspectives category.
Jenkins asked the Council for directions in responding to Terry.
***Connie Hansen (Eifler) moved to give Jenkins the freedom to inform Terry that JMC 100 did not meet the broad social perspectives and the course cannot be altered to do so. Motion carried.
- NEXT MEETING:
The next General Studies meeting is scheduled for August 20, 1998. The time will be discussed. The meeting will be in the Academic Affairs Conference Room, Founders Hall, Room 2122.

***Peg Camp (Bicak) moved to approve the above recommendations as WI. Motion carried. Two courses were denied for the WI designation. The courses are as follows:
- LNSK 103 - University Foundations
(This course was denied because the course does not deal with a specific discipline.)
- PE 498 - Special Topics
The Council discussed establishing a procedure for approving special topics/independent studies as WI. The CD/WI Subcommittee will develop a proposal on this issue.
- NEW BUSINESS:
- General Studies Elective Hours (Jenkins):
The Council clarified that the "elective" hours in the GS should remain within the range specified for each category. If students take the minimum hours in each section, they will have 39 hours. To meet the 45 hour requirement, students must take the additional hours in sections III - VI.
- Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Committee on GS Capstone Courses (Jenkins):
Jenkins asked for a volunteer to serve on the Faculty Senate Ad Hoc Committee with Rick Miller from Faculty Senate. Marguerite Tassi will serve on the Committee.
- OLD BUSINESS:
- Consider WSTD 220 Proposal (Lilly):
After some discussion,

- Consider JMC 100 Proposal (Terry):

Jenkins had the Council members get into working groups to discuss the syllabi and assessment procedure.

- NEW BUSINESS:
- Comments from Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Concerning Various General Studies Issues (Jim Roark):
Dr. Roark discussed with the Council creating more rigor in General Studies courses and he encourages Writing Intensive in 100 level courses.
- WSTD 220 - Proposal to Include this Course in the Personal Development Category (Carol Lilly):
Carol Lilly proposed WSTD 220 - Introduction to Women's Studies, as a General Studies course.
***Charlie Bicak (Eifler) moved that the GS Council formally adopt a policy to delay a vote on any GS course proposal for one month so information can be disseminated across campus and all interested parties have time to discuss the proposal. Motion carried.
- JMC 100GS - Proposal to Move this Course from the Personal Development Category to the Social Perspectives Section (Keith Terry):
The General Studies Council engaged in considerable discussion with Professors Terry and Lomicky on this issue. Professor Pigott, from the Sociology Department, participated in the discussion. No formal action was taken at this time. (See the preceding motion). Professor Terry indicated that he would provide Council members with additional information prior to the next meeting.
- Splitting Course Sections for WI Designation (Allan Jenkins - Kim Schipporeit):
The Council discussed a situation in which a department asked the Registrar's Office to split a previously approved WI course into a WI section and a non-WI section. It remained one class, with both sections taught by one instructor at the same time and in the same place. Students enrolled in the WI section were given more writing assignments than those enrolled in the non-WI section. Jenkins expressed a concern that this made WI look like punishment, and asked for a judgement by the Council on this practice.
***Mark Eifler (Camp) moved that an approved WI section, offered as a WI in a particular semester, must be taught as a WI course to all students in that section. Motion carried.

Jenkins discussed the GS Council hosting the First Friday Club at the Alumni House on March 6, 1998. Jenkins asked for volunteers to help with the function.

- Sociology 224GS and 200GS:
The Sociology Department is renumbering SOC 224GS to 124GS and 200GS to 100GS. The Department feels this is more enticing to incoming students.
- FORL 401 and PTE 401:
Jenkins recommended that the Council approve these two courses to be taught as inherently CD. After some discussion, Bicak suggested that Jenkins visit with the departments about this.

- NEW BUSINESS:
- Residence College - Dan Benge:
Dan Benge, Residence Life, discussed with the Council the possibility of creating a Residential College in Martin Hall and Ludden Hall. If a Residential College is implemented, classes will be offered in the residence halls. A limited number of Faculty would have offices in each hall to increase student/faculty interaction. Benge stated that a Residential College would enhance student living and increase student retention.
The presentation was informational, no Council action was required.
- Nebraska Department of Education - Rule 24:
Jenkins asked Dave Anderson to discuss Rule 24 with the Council. Anderson gave an of Rule 24 (Content of Endorsement areas). No Council action was required.
- OLD BUSINESS:
- 300/400 Level Report:

***Glen Powell (Bicak) moved to approve the 300/400 level report separate from the additional recommendations in the report. Motion carried. Nye - Don Envick. ***Charlie Bicak (Powell) moved the additional recommendations be communicated to the Education Policy and Academic Affairs Committees. Motion carried.
- Structural Assessment Update:
Jenkins asked the Council members how the collection process was going. Once the packets are collected, Kristi Milks will inform the Council that the material is available for review.
- Continuation of CD/WI Subcommittees:
Mark Eifler suggested discontinuing the current CD/WI Subcommittees. Eifler also suggested he and Glen Powell would review the CD/WI proposals and bring those that meet the criteria to the full Council for approval.
***Mark Eifler (Powell) moved to eliminate the current CD/WI Subcommittees. Motion carried.
***Mark Eifler (Powell) moved to create a new Subcommittee that would review both CD/WI proposals. Motion carried. The following will serve on the Subcommittee: Mark Eifler (CD liaison), Glen Powell (WI liaison), Don Envick, and Sonja Kropp.

- International Education:
Jerry Fox, Director of International Education, discussed the possibility of students having their CD requirements met if they study abroad.
The Council will discuss this possibility at a future meeting.

Jenkins distributed a report from the FS/GSC 300/400 Level Inclusion Committee. Bicak suggested the Council read through the report and think it over. The Council will have a formal vote next month.

This course is already approved for WI, however, an approval for an instructor change is needed for the current semester. JMC - Writing Feature and Magazine Articles - Teresa Hurteau. Jenkins made an executive decision and approved the instructor change.

- Faculty/Staff Club:
Jenkins would like the General Studies Council to be a host of this Club. The Council thought they would like to be the host in the Spring (March).
- NEXT MEETING:
Jenkins discussed the next meeting with the Council. Jenkins will be out of town and will not be able to meet on October 2. Jenkins would like to know which day Tuesday, September 30, or Wednesday, October 1, at 3:30, would work the best for the Council.
