GS Course:

Art Structure, ART 100

General Studies Learning Objectives to be assessed:

  1. The ability to comprehend the primary textbook
  2. The ability to respond in writing forms of reference and manners of discourse  appropriate to this particular discipline

Description of the Direct Measure to be used:

The direct measuring device is a thirty-question test, comprised of 12 Matching, 6 Multiple choice, 7 True/False, and 5 Fill-in-the-blank responses.  These test questions were taken from each chapter of the textbook used in all sections of Art Structure: Art Fundamentals, Theory and Practice, Ocvirk, Stinson, Wigg, Bone, and Cayton.

How the measure addresses these learning objectives:

The test questions were designed to assess the ART 100 student’s knowledge, understanding, and application level pertaining to the theories and principles associated with the visual elements and the fundamentals of design.

How the Humanities Objectives are being addressed:

In its current form, the Art Structure Assessment Test measures two of the four stated General Studies Humanities Category Objectives, as listed above:

  1. The ability to comprehend the primary textbook
  2. The ability to respond in writing forms of reference and manners of discourse  appropriate to this particular discipline

The current test consists of thirty (30) questions, with the following assessment distribution:

  • Questions 1 through 25 were designed to assess the students’ability to comprehend the primary textbook, i.e., course (knowledge) content and application of that knowledge.
  • Questions 26 through 30 were designed to assess the students’ ability to respond in writing forms of reference appropriate to this particular discipline, as well as measuring knowledge content.

Description of the students being assessed:

All students taking ART 100 take this test.

Timeline for the assessment process:

Fall 2006 – ART 100

Week 12:  A copy of the test as well as a simple chart for the collection of correct responses is given to each instructor teaching ART 100.
Week 15/16/17:  All ART 100 instructors administer the test, most giving it as a final in their class.

After the test is given, each ART 100 instructor is asked to use the chart to record the following information:

  • The course section
  • The number of students in the section taking the test
  • The total number of correct responses to each test question

These data are then submitted to the ART 100 Assessment Coordinator

Week 16/17:

The ART 100 Assessment Coordinator compiles the data from each ART 100 section:

  • The average of correct answers for each question in each section is determined and expressed in percentages.
  • The average of correct answers for all the ART 100 sections submitting data is determined and expressed in percentages
