UNK Recognized in Chronicle of Higher Education Article
In the February 26, 2012, edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education, UNK’s and UNL’s college prep programs were featured in an article entitled “To Guide First-Generation Students, U. of Nebraska Reaches Into High Schools.” The article focuses on the success each campus has experienced in assisting first-generation college students prepare for and apply to college, as well as develop skills that enable them to succeed on campus and graduate.
UNK’s Kearney Bound program works with Kearney High School, Kearney Catholic High School, Lexington High School, and North Platte High School to counsel students as they make the transition from high school to college. It began in 2006, and 198 students have participated in the program to this point. Michelle Westerbeck is currently the Kearney Bound Coordinator.

Fall World Affairs Conference Announced
The 2012 James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, September 25-26, 2012. The theme for this conference is Immigration and the Globalization of Labor. Keynote speaker for the conference will be Professor Marcelo Suarez-Orozco.
We are in the midst of the largest migratory wave in human history. What is the impact of globalization and immigration on businesses around the world? How do we educate newly arrived immigrant children? These are some of the major questions that Marcelo Suarez-Orozco addresses. A distinguished voice on immigration, globalization and education, he is the co-founder of the Harvard Immigration Projects, and has lectured around the world, including at the UN and the Vatican. He is currently the Courtney Sale Ross University Professor of Globalization and Education, at New York University.
Suarez-Orozco's latest book, a re-release of Latinos: Remaking America, is a comprehensive study of the fastest-growing ethnic group in America; by mid-century Latinos will comprise a quarter of the country's population. Suarez-Orozco's Learning in a New Land: Immigrant Students in American Society -- based on a five-year study of the lives, dreams, frustrations and ironies of hundreds of newly arrived children from the Caribbean, China, and Central America -- recently won the prestigious Stone Award for 2008, for Best Book on Education. In Learning in the Global Era, a new anthology, he offers constructive approaches to educate a global generation of youth in a rapidly changing world.
A member of the National Academy of Education, Marcelo Suarez-Orozco has been a tenured professor at Harvard and a fellow at Stanford. His books, many of them co-authored, all of them path-breaking, include The New Immigration; Globalization: Culture and Education in the New Millennium; Latinos: Remaking America; Children of Immigration; and the award-winning Transformations: Immigration, Family Life, and Achievement Motivation Among Latino Adolescents.
Make plans now to attend and encourage your students to attend the 2012 James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs, September 25-26, 2012.
