UNK's "Uncommon Approach to Common Assessment of General Education" Presented to Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)
Jeanne Butler, Director of Assessment, gave an invited presentation at the AAC&U General Education and Assessment conference in New Orleans, LA, in February. The presentation was entitled, "An Uncommon Approach to Common Assessment of General Education."
The presentation focused on an approach to assessing general education at a time when academic institutions are struggling to develop and implement comprehensive general education assessment that both demonstrates student achievement of general education outcomes and meets accreditation requirements.
In the session, Butler shared from UNK's experience to explain a process for campus-wide assessment of general education based on a common set of learning outcomes, common assignments, and an evaluation process using TaskStream and rubrics from AAC&U, providing a valuable resource for other institutions needing to adjust the way general education programs are assessed.
Butler's presentation at this meeting follows the presentation for TaskStream in October, which received recognition in January.

Department of Art and Art History Welcomes Art Chantry to Campus
Next Wednesday, March 7, legendary graphic designer Art Chantry will be on campus to visit Art department classes and review portfolios with seniors, as well as present "An Evening With Art Chantry" at 7:00 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall.
Art Chantry was instrumental in the formation of the "punk" and "grunge" movements of the Seattle area. His low-tech, edgy approach has been used for posters promoting such bands as Hole, Nirvana, The Sonics, Tina Turner, The Gits, George Thorogood, A Flock of Seagulls, Man or Astro-Man?, Romeo Void and a whole host of others. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Louvre, The Museum of Modern Art and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Chantry’s schedule for the day includes:
| |
9:15 a.m. |
Meet with senior design students to review portfolios and discuss designers entering the design and advertising profession |
| |
10:15 a.m. |
Meet with sophomore design students to review typographic exercises and discuss typographic design in his artwork |
| |
1:30 p.m. |
Meet with junior design students to review portfolios and discuss design approach related to poster layout and content branding |
| |
2:45 p.m. |
Meet with sophomore design students to review typographic exercises and discuss typographic design in his artwork |
| |
7:00 p.m. |
Present “An Evening with Art Chantry” in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall |
|
The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the UNK Department of Art and Art History, with support from a UNK Faculty Senate Artists and Lecturers Committee grant. Watch for screenprints of the poster Chantry designed for the event, which the Art department plans to make available for a fundraiser. |

"The Rescuers" Exhibit on Display at UNK Until March 15
An exhibit entitled “The Rescuers” is on display at UNK now through Thursday, March 15. This exhibit is sponsored by PROOF: Media for Social Justice, an organization “dedicated to the power of visual artists to bear witness, and create images that can make the anonymous waves of human rights tragedies into personal and immediate calls to action” (see http://proofmsj.com/).
“The Rescuers” tells the stories of “'ordinary' citizens, who, by choosing to rescue the ‘other’ became heroes" (see the exhibit in the Health and Sports Center), and it focuses on the 20th century genocides of Rwanda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, and the Holocaust.
The Heartland Holocaust Educational Fund is sponsoring “The Rescuers” exhibit as well as hosting an evening with PROOF executive director Leora Kahn on Monday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cedar Room of the Nebraskan Student Union.
Visit the exhibit to read the stories and see images of these individuals. The display is set up in the main corridor of the Health and Sports Center, on the main floor of the Nebraskan Student Union, and on the second floor of the library, and each poster is different, so be sure to visit them all! Then plan to attend Kahn’s presentation to learn more about the exhibit and the mission of PROOF.

Library Updates
The Reference Collection is on the move!
Written by Susan Mueller, Coordinator of Collection Services
muellersm@unk.edu
In order to make the collection more useful, it was thoughtfully examined. Titles that were available online were removed from the print collection. Other needed titles that were outdated were updated or replaced. Many titles were moved into the larger book collection.
Thanks to numerous individuals, ranging from Library staff to Facilities staff, the Reference Collection has been successfully relocated from its temporary location near the periodicals to its current location on 2nd floor in front of the Book Collection.
The vacated area on the lower level will be turned into additional open space for more study tables and soft seating.

Items to Note for Faculty and Faculty Committees
- Academic Affairs Committee
The link to the CAP ("Course Approval Process") information is located on the Academic Affairs Committee page. CAP is the electronic approval system that allows department chairs to initiate course proposals (create, alter, inactivate, or discontinue). Worksheets for both the creation of new courses and the alteration of existing courses are available on the CAP web site for faculty members to use as they gather the information department chairs will need to submit requests. Department chairs initiate program proposals (create, alter, or discontinue) using a paper form, which is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page, along with instructions.
The schedule of Academic Affairs deadlines for the 2011-2012 academic year is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page. The page also contains a committee roster and a link to the approved Academic Affairs minutes. Department or program chairs needing to make curricular changes should be aware of these deadlines and instructions.
- Faculty Handbook
The online Faculty Handbook contains the most current policy information. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2011-2013).
- Faculty Senate
To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared governance, the Faculty Senate website contains links to the senate roster, meeting agendas and packets, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.
- General Studies
The General Studies web site contains a description of the new General Studies Program effective for students entering UNK in the Fall of 2010. The site contains a list of the approved General Studies courses effective for the 2011-2012 academic year, a list of all of the approved Portal and Capstone topics, as well as lists of the Portals and Capstones offerings for the current semester.
- Graduate Council
The Graduate Council webpage contains information regarding changes to graduate courses or programs, as well as a list of the 2011 Graduate Program Committees.
- WI/CD Committee
The WI/CD Committee has posted a schedule of deadlines for the fall semester on the WI/CD Committee page. The page also contains instructions for applying for WI or CD designation, as well as a committee roster, agendas, and minutes. These resources are provided for those wishing to offer courses as WI or CD.
