Strides in General Studies Assessment Recognized by TaskStream

In October, Jeanne Butler, Director of Assessment, and Daren Snider, Director of General Studies, presented a webinar for TaskStream on the implementation of assessment in General Studies at UNK. The webinar, with over 1,000 participants from around the country, outlined the approach UNK took to renewing the General Studies Program and developing an innovative assessment plan in preparation for the 2011 HLC review. TaskStream has recognized UNK as a model for General Assessment in a flyer they share around the country, most recently at the Association of American Colleges and Universities Conference (AAC&U) in Washington D.C. at the end of January.

AmeriCorps Positions Available to UNK Students through Participation with Nebraska Campus Compact

In the fall, UNK joined with 11 other Nebraska colleges and universities to found the Nebraska Campus Compact, an affiliate of the national Campus Compact, which promotes service-learning and civic engagement among college students. The organization loosely defines civic engagement as connecting classroom learning with the opportunity to make a difference in the quality of life in a community.

The first project undertaken by NCC is an AmeriCorps project under which 36 students from the 12 institutions work either in after-school projects for at-risk youth or participate in Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs in communities in exchange for stipends. The project is funded by ServeNebraska, the Nebraska Volunteer Service Commission.

There are still open positions available to UNK students, with the possibility of filling more if there is interest.  These position come with a minimum stipend of $250, and at the end of their service, members receive an Educational Award of $1,175 to use towards paying off student loans or for additional educational expenses.

For additional information, contact Geraldine Stirtz in the UNK Office for Service-Learning at stirtzg@unk.edu.

Acclaimed Actor Delivers Performance of The Great Divorce at UNK

On Wednesday, February 22, the Philosophy Department will present a theatrical performance by Mr. Tony Lawton of The Great Divorce, a novel by C.S. Lewis. The presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Recital Hall and is free and open to the public.

Tony Lawton has adapted C.S. Lewis' novella, The Great Divorce, into a 90-minute, solo performance. Lewis' own favorite among his works, The Great Divorce is the story of Clive, a hapless professor, who, along with a motley band of malcontents, takes a very curious bus ride—from hell to heaven. They are each offered a chance to stay in heaven forever if they like, but the choice proves to be much harder than anyone would have guessed. Journeying between hell and heaven, Clive crosses a surprising, wildly inventive landscape drawn by Lewis' philosophical imagination. The piece is a feast of rich language, profound psychological insight, and humor. Satirical and comic, The Great Divorce is a wondrous ride filled with dazzling insight and language.

Lawton's performance has gained the following critical attention:

  • "Unmissable! From the quiet, seemingly casual beginning to the unforgettable final moments, Lawton has us in the palm of his hand." – Philadelphia City Paper
  • “Now this is storytelling. Anthony Lawton holds us rapt -- you can feel the intensity of the audience's attention -- with his masterful performance in The Great Divorce. . . . Each character. . . comes to life through Lawton's voice as he walks that fine line between the dramatic and the narrative. He brings the old-fashioned, very literary vocabulary to life. Masterful solo show of a C.S. Lewis tale... this is a show for the season." –Philadelphia Inquirer
  • "Brilliantly conceived and performed... as intelligent and provoking an evening as I've spent at the theater in a long time." – Broad Street Review
