New ADP Coordinator Beginning in Spring 2012;
ADP Hosts Events During Final Weeks of Fall 2011

Beginning with the spring semester, the ADP will once again have a faculty coordinator. Dennis Potthoff, from the Department of Teacher Education, has agreed to lead UNK’s ADP initiatives. Potthoff has been a member of the ADP Advisory Council since it began.

The ADP will host three activities before the end of the semester in support of its mission to “promote both civic and political engagement among students” (from the ADP web site).

December 2, 2011 – Times Talk: “Should the U.S. Adopt a Constitutional Amendment Requiring a Balanced Budget?”

In October of 2008, the ADP began hosting Times Talks to facilitate discussion of current issues across disciplines. The first Times Talk of the fall semester will be hosted by students in ECON 314, Public Finance, taught by Allan Jenkins. The students will address the timely question of a constitutional amendment for balancing the national budget. The Talk will be at 12:15 in Room 310 of the Nebraskan Student Union.

December 6, 2011 – E.N. Thompson Forum: “Pulse of the Plains: A Photographer’s Journey Connecting Water, Wildlife and Landscape,” Michael Forsberg

Each year, the ADP is pleased to advertise and support the E.N. Thompson Forum held at UNL, with a simultaneous broadcast at UNK in the Communications Center Room 101. “Water and Global Security” is the topic for the lectures in this year's series. The lectures explore water’s impact on society and the conflicts that arise from water issues.

The third E.N. Thompson Forum for 2011-2012 will take place on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m., featuring Nebraska’s renowned photographer Michael Forsberg. His presentation is entitled “Pulse of the Plains: A Photographer’s Journey Connecting Water, Wildlife and Landscape.”

For more information regarding the speakers or the E.N. Thompson Forum, see the E.N. Thompson website at http://enthompson.unl.edu/#forsberg.

December 9, 2011 – Times Talk: "Issues for Rural Health Care: The New Cost Conscious Environment"

A second Times Talk on December 9 will feature a presentation by students in ECON 410, Health Care Economics. The students will discuss rural health issues in the Talk at 12:15 in Room 310 of the Nebraskan Student Union.

UNK Hosted UNK Day in Omaha

Several members of the UNK administration as well as staff from the NU Foundation and UNK Alumni Association were in Omaha on Thursday, November 17th for a UNK Day in Omaha. This was a day filled with recruitment opportunities as well as alumni and donor relations. The UNK group included Chancellor Doug Kristensen; SVCASA Charlie Bicak; VCUR Curt Carlson; Dean Ed Scantling, Dean Tim Burkink; Dean Bill Jurma; Dean John La Duke; Dusty Newton, Director for Undergraduate Recruitment & Admissions; and NU Foundation and Alumni Staff Pete Kotsiopulos, Lucas Dart, Tracy Lungrin, Anne McConkey. Shane Stover and Maureen Miller from UNK Admissions also participated in the day.

The day began with UNK hosting an appreciation breakfast for just over 30 Omaha area high school counselors. Members of the UNK group spent the day then visiting with donors and potential donors as well as different media outlets. Chancellor Kristensen was on a local radio show on KFAB and also spent some time visiting with the editorial staff at the Omaha World Herald.

Part of the group visited Omaha's newest high school, Elkhorn South, where Chancellor Kristensen was able to interact with over 100 high school students (grades 9-12).

The day ended with a reception for Omaha area UNK alumni. Over 100 area alumns attended the event at Champion Run Golf Course.

- Dusty Newton, Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions

More e-books available via Ebrary and EBSCOhost

The availability and use of e-books is on the rise, and the library has added another e-book supplier to its online collections.   UNK now provides access to 25 e-books through Ebrary, with many more titles to be added in the future.   You can find these e-books in the Ebrary website, or appearing in Catalog results with other library materials.  These e-books may be viewed in a web browser, or downloaded to certain e-book readers or iOS/Android tablets supporting Adobe Digital Editions.

The library already has access to thousands of other e-book titles via Ebooks on EBSCOhost (formerly known as NetLibrary).  Over 3,000 new e-book titles have been added to the EBSCOhost platform this Fall semester.  Search for these from the EBSCOhost website or within the Library’s Catalog.

As more e-books, print books, videos, and government documents are received, these new resources will appear in the library’s RSS feeds. Clicking on any of the subject links will display a list of new titles and links to receive additional updates via email or RSS.
