Alpha Psi Omega Presents The Shape of Things December 1-4
The UNK Theatre program is pleased to announce that the final show of the fall semester will be student led. For the first time in 16 years, the theatre honorary, Alpha Psi Omega (APO) is producing The Shape of Things by Neil LaBute. Members of the APO will serve as director, scene designer, lighting designer, technical director, props master, stage manager, sound designer, and most of the cast.
The Shape of Things tells the story of four college students and their friendships. One of the friends, Adam, an "average joe," falls deeply in love with Evelyn, an artist pursuing her M.F.A. In this subjective production, the cast tells the story in such a way that audience members will draw their own conclusions about what is happening between the characters. Nothing is as it seems.
The following student crew and cast (as well as one faculty member) will present the show in the Studio Theatre on December 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. and December 3-4 at 2:00 p.m.:

Native American Month
Written by Toné Mendoza, Diversity Specialist Librarian
mendozaac@unk.edu
Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian, rode on horseback in 1915 from state to state seeking official approval for a day to honor Indians. He delivered the endorsements of 24 states to the White House, but not until 1990 with President George H.W. Bush’s approved did the resolution designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month become a reality.
First Nation people in Nebraska
About 15 tribes have been identified as having lived in, hunted in, or otherwise occupied territory within the current state boundaries of Nebraska: the Arapaho lived for more than a thousand years throughout the western part of Nebraska and was home to the Arikara and Pawnee. The Kiowa also once occupied western Nebraska as did the Cheyenne. The Comanche had formerly lived in the territory and moved south toward Texas. The Ponca were forced to move south into present day Oklahoma and others such as the Kansa, Omaha, Osage, and others were also forced to move out of the Nebraska area. But it was the Great Sioux Nation and the Lakota that used Nebraska as a hunting ground.
Eventually they ceded their lands through various treaties to the U.S. Government, which rendered these among the lands it gave away to new settlers moving in from the east under the Homestead Act. Despite this, several Indian reservations still exist in Nebraska and one of the most famous confrontations between Native Americans, with
their leaders, including Russell Means, and the US government came about on the Pine Ridge Reservation in the 1970s.

Items to Note for Faculty and Faculty Committees
- **NOTE FOR SPRING 2012 ADVISING **
Portal (188GS) and Capstone (388GS) course descriptions have been prepared for use in advising students for Spring 2012 registration. The descriptions are posted on the General Studies website at http://www.unk.edu/academicaffairs/generalstudies.aspx?id=53803.
- Academic Affairs Committee
The link to the CAP ("Course Approval Process") information is located on the Academic Affairs Committee page. CAP is the electronic approval system that allows department chairs to initiate course proposals (create, alter, inactivate, or discontinue). Worksheets for both the creation of new courses and the alteration of existing courses are available on the CAP web site for faculty members to use as they gather the information department chairs will need to submit requests. Department chairs initiate program proposals (create, alter, or discontinue) using a paper form, which is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page, along with instructions.
The schedule of Academic Affairs deadlines for the 2011-2012 academic year is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page. The page also contains a committee roster and a link to the approved Academic Affairs minutes. Department or program chairs needing to make curricular changes should be aware of these deadlines and instructions.
- Faculty Handbook
The online Faculty Handbook contains the most current policy information. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2011-2013).
- Faculty Senate
To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared governance, the Faculty Senate website contains links to the senate roster, meeting agendas and packets, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.
- General Studies
The General Studies web site contains a description of the new General Studies Program effective for students entering UNK in the Fall of 2010. The site contains a list of the approved General Studies courses effective for the 2011-2012 academic year, a list of all of the approved Portal and Capstone topics, as well as lists of the Portals and Capstones offerings for the current semester.
- Graduate Council
The Graduate Council webpage contains information regarding changes to graduate courses or programs, as well as a list of the 2011 Graduate Program Committees.
- WI/CD Committee
The WI/CD Committee has posted a schedule of deadlines for the fall semester on the WI/CD Committee page. The page also contains instructions for applying for WI or CD designation, as well as a committee roster, agendas, and minutes. These resources are provided for those wishing to offer courses as WI or CD.
