Undergraduate Student Research Showcased at Annual Fall Symposium
The annual Fall Student Research Symposium will be Sunday, October 23, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Nebraskan Student Union. Students will present oral and poster presentations to describe the research they have conducted with their faculty mentors. Plan to attend the symposium to see the rich variety of research projects taking place among the undergraduates at UNK.
World Affairs Conference on Tuesday, November 8 Features Reza Aslan
The annual World Affairs Conference has typically been in the spring, but after last year's event, the decision was made to move the conference to the fall semester. In the place of the World Affairs Conference, this year UNK will host a single event on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in the UNK Fine Arts Drake Theatre.
The event will feature Mr. Reza Aslan, author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam. Reza Aslan addresses the topic of Islam, the Middle East, and Muslim Americans with authority, wit and an infectious optimism. When he talks about Modern Islam, the religion and politics of the Middle East, or the rise of a sophisticated Muslim middle class, audiences listen. His talks entertain, but never at the expense of complexity or nuance. Aslan speaks for a generation of Muslims who eschew the fundamentalist stereotype and want to usher in a new era of Islamic democracy. Extremism is winding down, he says, yet media coverage suggests the opposite. As a best-selling author and entrepreneur, Aslan has made extraordinary efforts to show Americans the true face of Islam today: a generation of change makers in America and abroad, who are solidifying relations with the West while making their own hopeful marks on the world.
Aslan is also the author of How to Win a Cosmic War, is a contributing editor to The Daily Beast, and a member of many prominent foreign relations and policy councils. He is also the editor of Tablet and Pen, a literary anthology that uses the arts to bridge the gap of understanding between East and West. Aslan appears regularly in the media, on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report among other high profile outlets. In the corporate realm, Aslan is President and CEO of Aslan Media Inc., which runs BoomGen Studios, a unique media company focused entirely on entertainment about the Greater Middle East and its Diaspora communities. He has degrees in Religion from Santa Clara University, Harvard, and UC Santa Barbara, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, where he was named the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 8, 7:30 p.m., Fine Arts Drake Theatre, for Reza Aslan and the James E. Smith Conference on World Affairs!

Library - In Brief Online: Statistics
Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2012 Now Available
This annual factbook, published since 1878, contains more than 1,400 tables of social, political and economic facts about our nation and the world. Among the broad topics covered are marriage and divorce, health, education, law enforcement, national security, social insurance, business, science and technology, agriculture, natural resources, energy, information and communications, banking and international statistics.
The source of the data is not limited to the Census Bureau— statistics are also derived from other federal agencies and private sources. Data in this edition are generally for the most recent year or period available by spring 2011.
The Statistical Abstract is available to all, and can be found at: http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/.
For more information about the future of the Statistical Abstract and the way the Census collects data, see this article, as well as the follow-up article, both authored by Robert M. Groves, the Director of the Census Bureau.
New same-sex household data from the 2010 Census released
The recently released Same-sex Couple Household Statistics from the 2010 Census revises estimates released earlier in the summer. Having reworked the numbers by editing against several factors, including validating names by gender, the Census Bureau writers of the report state that the percentage of all United States households headed by same-sex couples is 0.773 (total households = 116,716,292; total same sex couple households = 901,997).
The graph located below shows the percentage of same-sex households by state (note, the American Community Survey (ACS) 2010 data is collected by the Census Bureau, but is not a part of the 2010 Census; it is included to validate the census findings).
The national average of 0.773 intersects with the Census summary file counts (the blue line; note this is not the corrected estimates line) about at the position of North Carolina. Of the states and district that, at the time of the census, issued marriage certificates to same sex couples (CT, IA, MA, NH, VT, and D.C.) and the states that did not perform same sex marriages but recognized them from other states (Maryland, New York, and Rhode Island), only Iowais not above the national average. Just below Iowa is Nebraska with a percentage of .33 same sex households (721,130 total households; 2,356 same sex households), followed by Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota.
The revised data has been analyzed by the Williams Institute of the UCLA School of Law. Here is the distribution of same-sex couple households in Nebraska:

- Same-sex couples per 1,000 households by census tract (adjusted)
Census documents such as the one referenced in this article are linked through the library’s Government Documents webpages . In addition, as a partial Federal Depository, the library serves as an access point to various print government publications and digital publications. These can be found by searching in the catalog.
