"Water and Global Security" Theme for 2011-2012 E.N. Thompson Forum Lecture Series
An increasingly precious natural resource, water is essential to improving global health, ensuring social welfare and political stability, and promoting economic development and environmental sustainability. Water can be a source of national and regional conflict and for centuries civilizations have risen and fallen based on their ability to harness its power. The Thompson Forum will bring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus experts on global water issues to explore the challenges of scarcity, security and sustainability.
The schedule for the series includes:
| |
Nov. 1 |
Sandra Postel, founding director of the Global Water Policy Project and Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment, “Dividing the Waters: Global Security in a Water-Stressed World" |
| |
Dec. 6 |
Michael Forsberg, Nebraska native and acclaimed conservation photographer, “Pulse of the Plains: A Photographer’s Journey Connecting Water, Wildlife and Landscape" |
| |
Feb. 16 |
Mogens Bay and E. Robert Meaney, executive leadership for Valmont Industries Inc., “Is a Global Water Crisis Avoidable?" |
| |
Mar. 28 |
Don Worster, a pioneer in the field of environmental history, “An Unquenchable Thirst: How the Great Plains Created a Water Abundance and Then Lost It" |
| |
TBA |
Charles and Linda Wilson Dialogue on Domestic Issues |
The Nebraska Humanities Council will collaborate with seven colleges and universities across the state to simulcast the lectures of the 2011-12 E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues.
The lecture series, which is a cooperative project of the Cooper Foundation and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, will address water and global security.
Both students and community members are invited to join in viewing the lecture and discussing its implications. The events are free and open to the public. Free tickets are required only for the Lied Center in Lincoln and guarantee a reserved seat there.
More information about the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues is available at http://enthompson.unl.edu.
**Please note, the September 28 lecture has been canceled due to Dr. Wangari Maathai canceling her trip to the United States. If rescheduled, a new date will be announced.

Library - In Brief Online
Update! – Prepare online for GMAT, LSAT, and other tests with library e-resources
Written by Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu
Students considering graduate school are often required to take entrance exams, such as the GRE, LSAT, MCAT or GMAT. Practice tests for many of these exams (except the GRE – see below) are freely available through the library’s Testing and Education Reference Center (TERC). TERC also includes a database of U.S. graduate school programs searchable by major, location, and other criteria, as well as databases of private scholarships available for undergraduate and graduate study.
Users accessing these practice tests will need to create a free, personal account in TERC. TERC is available online 24-7 to UNK students on- and off-campus, and is listed under the "T"s, as well as "Careers and Test Prep," from the library’s "Articles & E-Resources" webpage.
Additional test-prep and career resources are accessible online by searching the library catalog, including these titles:
**GRE Test Takers: As of August 1, 2011 — a GRE Revised General Test has been issued, which is structured and scored quite differently from the GRE of years past. The Testing and Education Reference Center database has not yet been updated to reflect these changes, so please do not use TERC to prepare for the revised GRE!
Free test preparation materials for the GRE Revised General Test are available online through the Education Testing Service.

Items to Note for Faculty and Faculty Committees
- Academic Affairs Committee
The link to the CAP ("Course Approval Process") information is located on the Academic Affairs Committee page. CAP is the electronic approval system that allows department chairs to initiate course proposals (create, alter, inactivate, or discontinue). Worksheets for both the creation of new courses and the alteration of existing courses are available on the CAP web site for faculty members to use as they gather the information department chairs will need to submit requests. Department chairs initiate program proposals (create, alter, or discontinue) using a paper form, which is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page, along with instructions.
The schedule of Academic Affairs deadlines for the 2011-2012 academic year is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page. The page also contains a committee roster and a link to the approved Academic Affairs minutes. Department or program chairs needing to make curricular changes should be aware of these deadlines and instructions.
- Faculty Handbook
The online Faculty Handbook contains the most current policy information. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2011-2013).
- Faculty Senate
To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared governance, the Faculty Senate website contains links to the senate roster, meeting agendas and packets, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.
- General Studies
The General Studies web site contains a description of the new General Studies Program effective for students entering UNK in the Fall of 2010. The site contains a list of the approved General Studies courses effective for the 2011-2012 academic year, a list of all of the approved Portal and Capstone topics, as well as lists of the Portals and Capstones offerings for the current semester.
- Graduate Council
The Graduate Council webpage contains information regarding changes to graduate courses or programs, as well as a list of the 2011 Graduate Program Committees.
- WI/CD Committee
The WI/CD Committee has posted a schedule of deadlines for the fall semester on the WI/CD Committee page. The page also contains instructions for applying for WI or CD designation, as well as a committee roster, agendas, and minutes. These resources are provided for those wishing to offer courses as WI or CD.
