Office of International Education Offering New Opportunities to Teach and Study Abroad

With faculty director, Kathy Smith (Accounting/Finance), nine students have been studying abroad this fall at Hebei Normal University in Shijiazhuang, China. (See the articles in eNews on August 20 and October 1, Senior Emily Wemhoff’s articles in the Antelope on September 16 and October 7, and Senior Ben Cooney’s blog.) This program was part of a new approach to study abroad opportunities, which the Office of International Education (OIE) has been developing in cooperation with UNK faculty and administration.

This fall’s China study abroad program has been successful, and a similar trip will take during the Fall of 2011. In addition, a new semester abroad program with a similar structure has been developed in Lima, Peru for UNK Spanish language students wanting to study abroad during the Spring of 2012. The deadline for student applications is February 15, 2011. These semester abroad options are affordable, at approximately the same cost as a semester at UNK, and accessible for UNK students who receive full UNK credit for their course work in the program.

The program is not only beneficial to students. The OIE also sees this as an opportunity for faculty development and requests program director applications for either the China trip or the Peru trip by December 3. The program director teaches one UNK course and administers the program with the support of the UNK Office of International Programs and Study Abroad Office. In addition to round trip air fare, the UNK faculty director will be provided with an apartment and a full-time salary for teaching one class and managing the program.

For more information on this program, see: http://www.unk.edu/academics/studyabroad.aspx?id=50014

For those interested in other opportunities to teach overseas, the OIE is seeking individuals to teach English conversation and American culture to Chinese high school students near Beijing, China, during the spring and summer. Two opportunities are available: January 17 through March 25, 2011, and June 15 through August 16, 2011. Teachers will be provided room and board, airfare, transportation to and from the airport in China, and a pre-departure training workshop.

Use ‘Hoover’s’ and ‘First Research’ for company and industry research

Written by Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu

Whether researching for class assignments or job interviews, students looking for business information should consider these two online resources available through the library:

Hoover’s Online is a directory of 35 million companies which includes brief industry profiles for 600 business sectors, and biographical information on key executives.  Use Hoover’s to find recent sales figures and the history for the Kearney-based clothing chain, The Buckle, or find similar company information about Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. or Union PacificHoover’s is listed under the “H’s”, as well as “Business and Management,” “Careers and Test Prep,” and “Directories” from the library’s “Articles & E-Resources” webpage.

First Research provides detailed analyses to over 300 industries, updated quarterly, providing insights on business trends and forecasts.  This information can be valuable in developing marketing reports and preparing for job interviews.   First Research is listed under the “F’s” and the subjects of “Business and Management,” “Careers and Test Prep,” and “Economics” from the library’s “Articles & E-Resources” webpage.
