Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions Bringing High School Students to Campus

The Office of Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions aggressively pursues new students throughout the academic year. Campus visits began August 30 and will continue through the semester, ending December 10. These visits bring groups of prospective students, parents, teachers, and/or counselors to campus for tours and information gathering.

The staff also plans special events, focused on drawing particular groups of students to campus and exposing them to the UNK experience. In the next week, two special groups will visit UNK.

Multicultural Scholars and Leaders Day: Wednesday, October 27 – Nearly 200 high school juniors and seniors will attend our annual Multicultural Scholars and Leaders Day.  The day's schedule will include campus tours, college presentations, a luncheon that highlights the many scholarship opportunities, and interaction with our academic success offices and student organizations.

Senior Day: Monday, November 1  – Approximately 200 high school seniors and their parents will be on campus. The day’s schedule will include campus tours, academic program presentations, as well as interaction with student organization groups in a fair setting.

Undergraduate Student Research Showcased at Annual Fall Symposium

The annual Fall Student Research Symposium will be Sunday, October 24, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Nebraskan Student Union. Students will present oral and poster presentations to describe the research they have conducted with their faculty mentors. Plan to attend the symposium to see the rich variety of research projects taking place among the undergraduates at UNK.

Practice for PRAXIS, GRE and more with new library e-resource

Written by Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu

UNK students preparing for graduation may also be contemplating some important exams outside the classroom.  A new online resource through the library can help students with their preparation for certification or graduate entrance exams.

New to the library’s database line-up is Gale’s Testing and Education Reference Center (TERC), which provides e-books  and online practice exams for several exams, including the GRE, LSAT, MCAT and MAT, PRAXIS I, TOEFL, TOEIC and U.S. citizenship.   TERC also includes a database of U.S. graduate school programs searchable by major, location, and other criteria, as well as databases of private scholarships available for undergraduate and graduate study.

Users accessing these practice exams will need to create a free, personal account in TERC.  TERC is available online 24/7 to UNK students on- and off-campus, and is listed under the listed under the “T”s, as well as “Careers and Test Prep,” “Directories,” and “Electronic Book Collections” from the library’s “Articles & E-Resources” webpage.

Additional test-prep and career resources are available online through the library catalog, including these e-book titles:

More online government documents added to library catalog

Written by Rochelle Krueger, Lecturer/Government Documents Librarian
kruegerr@unk.edu

A new wealth of information is available at your fingertips!  UNK’s Calvin T. Ryan Library recently subscribed to a new service from MARCive – “Documents Without Shelves”.  This service provides catalog records to thousands of electronic government documents, made available with one click in full-text or PDF.  Here are just a few examples:

These records are fully-searchable in the UNK library catalog by agency, title, subject, and even by keyword!  And again, because they are the electronic documents, the full-text is available at your convenience wherever you are!  New records are received monthly, along with a listing of new additions through an RSS feed.

Of course the library still receives government documents in print, as well.  The newest government documents can be found on the new books shelf located on the library’s first floor.

If you would like more information, please contact Rochelle Krueger, Government Documents Librarian (2nd floor at the Library), at kruegerr@unk.edu or 308-865-8542.  The Government Documents home page can be found at:  http://www.unk.edu/library/govdocs/.

CBT and CFAH Receive Grants and Gifts through the NU Foundation

The College of Business and Technology recently received a grant of $140,000 from the University of Nebraska Foundation. The money will assist the college in the establishment of a new business program in supply chain management.

The College of Fine Arts and Humanities also received a Foundation grant. The college will use the $110,000 grant to update the equipment of the student-managed radio station, KLPR.

In addition, the Department of Music and Performing Arts will benefit from money given to the University of Nebraska Foundation as part of the Campaign for Nebraska. The gift of $500,000 (in addition to previous gifts totaling $2 million) from an anonymous donor was given for the purpose of developing the Music programs at UNK.
