UNK Assembles Students, Families, and Local Communities in Tomorrow’s Family Day and Band Day Festivities

Two long-standing fall traditions continue tomorrow with a day of festivity at UNK.

Family Day Activities

Family Day is sponsored by the UNK Loper Programming and Activities Council each year in order to bring students’ families to campus for a day of activity. The schedule for the day includes tours, receptions, presentations, music, sports, and food. LPAC has coordinated several opportunities for students, faculty, and administration to showcase the breadth of the experience enjoyed at UNK.

Registration for Family Day will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Atrium. A registration form is available online. Several events are will take place throughout the morning, including “Exploring the Sky,” a planetarium show in the Bruner Hall of Science; “Paying for Your University Education,” a financial aid workshop in the Fireplace Lounge; “Chemistry Spectacular,” a demonstration by the American Chemical Society in the Fine Arts Recital Hall; and “UNK Nebraskats in Concert,” a choir concert in the Fine Arts Theatre. The Admissions Office will give campus tours beginning at 9:30 a.m., and each college is holding a reception in the Nebraskan Student Union. See the Family Day schedule for specific times and locations

At 11:15, families can enjoy The Family Tailgate Picnic in the Chancellor’s Tent on the south end of Foster Field under the scoreboard. Prices are $6 for adults, $4 for children under 12, and $2 for UNK students with a meal plan. At the picnic, the Chancellor will announce the Outstanding Family. A nomination form is available online

Band Day Event

UNK’s Band Day Parade and Competition is an important part of the Family Day activities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Railroad Street and Central Avenue, following the parade route north to 27th Street and then west to Cope Stadium for the 12:45 pregame performance by the UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band and the 1:00 kickoff of the UNK football game against Mesa State.

The Band Day tradition continues under new leadership with UNK’s new Director of Bands, Duane Bierman, and new Assistant Director of Bands, Michael Beard. The event is an opportunity for local marching bands to compete and gauge their progress at this point in the marching band season. Bierman reports that over 800 area high school and middle school students will be participating this year. The competition judges are Daniel Laing, Director of Bands at Hastings College, and Seth Fletcher, Lecturer of Low Brass at UNK.

Library - In Brief Online

Dissertations & Theses database now available

Written by Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu

Curious to explore what other students have published on various subjects? The library now offers access to ProQuest's Dissertations & Theses database, replacing Dissertation Abstracts Online via FirstSearch.

Dissertations & Theses provides improved access to over 2.7 million citations of doctoral dissertations and master's or honors theses published from around the world since 1637.   In addition, this new database provides abstracts and 24-page PDF previews of many dissertations and theses published since 1997.   A smaller number of  dissertations and theses are also available in full-text online, if published at a university that provides open access.

Dissertations & Theses is listed under the “Ds” and the “Dissertations & Theses” category of the library’s “Articles & E-Resources” webpage.

Produce and polish your presentations in new library workroom

Written by Dr. Ronald Wirtz, Coordinator of User Services
wirtzrl@unk.edu

Last academic year, library staff received numerous requests from students for a place where they could practice speeches or PowerPoint presentations before they actually had to deliver them for a grade.  We listened, and have provided even more than what was requested!

production

The Production and Presentation Workroom includes a computer with Microsoft Office and Adobe e-Learning Suite applications.

The new Production and Presentation Workroom on the second floor of  the Calvin T. Ryan Library is equipped with a projector, computer, and the usual Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.  Students can use this workroom individually or in small groups to develop and practice presentations or projects.

It is also possible to go far beyond PowerPoint, however, since the software on the workroom computer includes the latest Adobe e-Learning Suite.  The software tools include nine powerful Adobe programs, including:

  • Acrobat 9 Pro
  • Bridge CS5
  • Device Central CS5
  • Captivate 5
  • Dreamweaver CS5
  • Flash Professional CS5
  • Photoshop CS5 Extended
  • Presenter 7
  • Soundbooth CS5

With these Adobe software tools, students can edit video clips and sound files, develop Web pages or entire websites, produce streaming Flash presentations, edit and retouch digital photographs, and much more.

Students should use a high-capacity flash or “thumb” USB drive to transport pre-existing files and to export finished products.  The workroom computer can also be used to read and “burn” DVDs or CDs for transport.

To use the Production and Presentation Workroom, please ask to check out the workroom key at the library’s Circulation Desk.  The workroom is available in three-hour increments anytime during normal library operating hours.

HPERLS Hosts 7th Annual Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day

On Friday, September 10, over 600 4th grade students and 60 elementary school teachers visited UNK’s campus as part of the 7th annual Nebraska Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day. 200 HPERLS students, faculty, and staff also participated in the event.

The purpose of NE Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day is to encourage students to begin developing lifelong healthy habits. Those involved in the program demonstrate that physical activity can be fun, and they work to increase the nutrition knowledge of the students. Sixteen physical activity stations on Foster Field included parachutes, step aerobics, hula hooping, cup stacking, a human ladder, an obstacle course, and many others. The students also engaged in two hours of interactive nutrition education in the Field House, including an energy balance demonstration where students run to burn calories associated with different food options. Event participants also enjoyed a free lunch together.
