College of Education Prepares for Visit from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)

A Board of Examiners Team from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) will be on the UNK campus from Saturday, September 18th through Wednesday, September 22nd. UNK is undergoing a "continuing" review of all education programs at both the undergraduate (Initial certification) level and at the graduate (Advanced) level. While we report in writing on our progress towards six national standards on an annual basis, we must also stand for a full review every seven years in order to maintain our national accreditation. The review is extensive and complex and requires an extensive data analysis of our candidates' performance on a number of both common unit-wide assessments and individual department-level assessments. The seven members of the team will be looking for overall quality and specifically for data-driven changes we have made over the last seven years to ensure the continuous improvement of our degree programs and our candidates. While the team is here at UNK, they will interview over 200 people closely associated with our programs – students, graduates, faculty members, UNK administrators, principals, superintendents, cooperating teachers and professionals who recruit our graduates.

The NCATE visit follows an extensive review of our education programs conducted by the State of Nebraska during the summer of 2010. We did extremely well in the state review, with all 49 of our education programs being "approved" by the Nebraska Department of Education for this year with 47 approved for seven years. The other two programs are completing work to get the seven-year approval.

UNK is fortunate to have dedicated education professionals housed in all four colleges, who are heavily invested in the review and accreditation process. Without everyone's help and hard work we would not be successful. I must also recognize Dr. Glen Powell, Associate Dean of the COE and NCATE Coordinator, for his work over the last five years in preparing UNK for this visit. His work with our assessment team was particularly exemplary as was his work as the primary author of our Institutional Report.

We look forward to the opportunity to show the national team why we believe UNK is deserving of ongoing national accreditation.

- Ed Scantling, Dean of the College of Education in collaboration with
Glen Powell, Associate Dean of the College of Education

Documentation for NCATE can be found at the Accreditation Web Site for the College of Education.

The schedule for the NCATE visit is extensive and affects many individuals on campus. Saturday’s events include tours and times of greeting and orientation. Sunday the team will begin to review documents in the exhibit room. Monday the team will be on campus and begin meeting with various groups, as described in the abbreviated schedule that follows:

Academic and Career Services Celebrates Grand Opening in Two Locations

Early in the spring semester of 2010, the offices of Academic Advising and Career Services joined to form Academic and Career Services. To celebrate this new direction for the team and to inform the campus community of the services provided, Academic and Career Services will hold a Grand Opening on September 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in MSAB Room 140.

Additionally, in order to better serve the students in the College of Business and Technology, Academic and Career Services has established a satellite office in West Center beginning August 31. This office will be open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A separate Grand Opening will be held in the new West Center Satellite Office Room 108N on September 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend these Grand Opening celebrations, enjoy refreshments, and learn about the ways the staff of Academic and Career Services assist students to plan their academic and career paths and then execute their plans with success.

New Training Required for Undergraduate Student Researchers

UNK, in compliance with federal policy, has adopted a policy for training undergraduate students in the "responsible conduct of research"  (RCR).  Any student funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation must be trained in RCR, and the National Institutes of Health are moving toward a similar policy.  As we do with training in the protection of human subjects, UNK extends this requirement to all students participating in organized research.

The minimum requirement is that students complete the appropriate module in the CITI on-line training program.  There are modules for math and physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities.  The mentor should select the most appropriate module and direct their student to complete it.  The Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity will maintain a file of student completion records.  Students should plan to spend 2-3 hours to complete the program, but they can do this in multiple sessions.

Direct mentoring from the student's research supervisor is also very important.  Any faculty member who is working with a student on an independent scholarly project should acculturate the student to the expectations of their academic field.  Some departments also include research ethics in their curriculum.

Any student participating in campus-level student research programs (SSRP, URF, grants from the URC) will be required to complete the CITI training.  Departments and faculty are welcome to require students doing departmental level research to also complete the CITI training, and the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity will maintain their completion records.

The training program can be found here:  https://www.citiprogram.org/Default.asp.

-John Falconer, Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
