Outstanding Educators Inducted into Academy for Teacher Education Excellence for 2010

The UNK ADVISORY COUNCIL ON TEACHER EDUCATION recently announced the 2010 inductees into the Academy for Teacher Education Excellence at UNK. The purpose of the academy is to recognize, reward and support the excellence that “select” teacher educators demonstrate in the preparation of new professionals for the P-12 education profession. Inductees represent professionals who work in the schools as educators or as faculty members at UNK. The 2010 class of inductees is particularly strong and very representative of the many dedicated educators who commit themselves each year to working with future teachers from UNK, and we are indebted to them for their long term work with our students. The inductees will be recognized at a program on Thursday, April 29th at 3pm at UNK’s Health and Sports Center room 150/151.

The inductees include:

  • Robin Bennett (2010) Ms. Bennett is a classroom teacher at Meadowlark Elementary School in Kearney.  Robin exemplifies what it means to be an effective teacher.  She regularly works with UNK student teachers and for the past six years, she has enthusiastically opened her door to Math Methods students from UNK.  Each year our students are inspired by Ms. Bennett’s creativity, love for children and enthusiasm for elementary teaching.  Robin has a desire to continue to learn and has participated in every UNK Teacher Education Program of Excellence Math workshop and most recently joined the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  Robin is an excellent role model who has a strong commitment to UNK.

  • Jeanne McClemens (2010) Ms. McClemens is a classroom teacher at Park Elementary School in Kearney.  Jeanne is an outstanding teacher who inspires those who visit her class.  She has a longstanding history of working with UNK students.  Ms. McClemens regularly takes TE 344 students and student teachers.  She never says “no” to having another UNK student.  Students comment regularly about how much they learn in Jeanne’s classroom and are inspired by her high energy, enthusiasm, and her exceptional ability to teach her kindergarten children to maximize their potential.  Ms. McClemens sees herself as a lifelong learner and loves to share what she has learned at conferences and thru reviewing professional web sites.  Her commitment to learning is what enables her to be the great teacher she is.

  • John Anderson (2010) Dr. Anderson is a Professor in the Political Science department at UNK.  Dr. Anderson a former K-12 teacher has demonstrated a sustained, passionate commitment to the preparation of UNK teaching candidates.  John is a driving force for the TE 100/PSCI 110 curriculum.  The courses are conceptually woven together and reflect UNK’s commitment to promoting the role of schools/schooling in a democratic society.  Dr. Anderson has a deep and extensive involvement in the National and Nebraska Networks for Educational Renewal and has published regularly on Schools, Democracy and Education.

  • Paul Bishop (2010) Dr. Paul Bishop is a Professor in the Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies department at UNK.  Dr. Bishop has been a leader and strong advocate for teacher education in the College of Education for over thirty years.  Dr. Bishop coordinates the Adapted Physical Education program and the MAE Physical Education Master Teacher program at UNK.  He has published extensively and is known nationally as a leader in the field of adapted physical education.  Paul excels in the classroom where he has high expectations for his students and he has a real passion for working with student teachers in the schools and in the adapted physical education classroom.  Dr. Bishop’s advice is valued by all, because it is rooted in best practice with a heavy dose of wisdom gained over a lifetime of teaching.

Scientific American is considered one of the world’s leading magazines of scientific discovery and technological innovation, written in a style which is both informative and accessible to the general public.

Now, all issues of  Scientific American back to 1993 are now available online in full-page PDF format. Need articles from before 1993? The library owns back issues dating to 1845 in print or microfilm. Visit the lower level of the library and page through these older issues, or if you’re a UNK distance student, place a request through Interlibrary Loan to have an article sent to you online.

Whether you’re looking for issues of Scientific American, or issues from thousands of other journals titles, you can locate these journals by title using the Journal Finder, Enhanced Catalog or Classic Catalog.  Any of these three tools will indicate whether that magazine or journal is available in print or online through UNK.

Items to Note for Faculty and Faculty Committees

  •   Academic Affairs Committee
The link to the CAP ("Course Approval Process") information is located on the Academic Affairs Committee page. CAP is an electronic approval system that has taken the place of the paper forms for course proposals. The new online system allows department chairs to initiate proposals, which then automatically route to the next levels in the approval process. The entire approval process can be monitored online. **NOTE** The paper process for making changes to programs will continue; the form and instructions for submitting program proposals are available on the Academic Affairs Committee page.

Worksheets for both the creation of new courses and the alteration of existing courses have now been added to the CAP information page. Faculty members may use these worksheets to assist them in gathering the necessary information for department chairs, who are responsible for entering course requests in the system.

The schedule of Academic Affairs deadlines for the 2009-2010 academic year is available on the Academic Affairs Committee page. The page also contains a committee roster and a link to the approved Academic Affairs minutes. Department or program chairs needing to make curricular changes should be aware of these deadlines and instructions.

  •   Faculty Handbook In a continuing effort to provide faculty with the most current policy information, the Faculty Handbook has been revised and reorganized. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2009-2011).

Please note that the Faculty Handbook is updated in an online version only; refer to the online handbook when looking for the most up-to-date versions of policies, including the new Guidelines for Evaluation, Promotion, and Tenure, which have recently been revised.

  •   Faculty Senate To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared goverenance, the 2009-2010 Faculty Senate Roster is posted on the Faculty Senate home page. The page also contains links to meeting agendas, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.

  •   General Studies
Instructions have been posted on the General Studies website regarding the submission of courses  for the new General Studies Program. The course submission page includes information about the portal courses and the capstone courses.

  •  Graduate Council
A webpage has been created for the Graduate Council. It contains information regarding changes to graduate courses or programs, as well as a list of the 2009 Graduate Program Committees and a link to important Graduate Faculty announcements.

  •   WI/CD Committee The WI/CD Committee has posted a schedule of deadlines for the spring semester on the WI/CD Committee page. The page also contains instructions for applying for WI or CD designation, as well as a committee roster, agendas, and minutes. These resources are provided for those wishing to offer courses as WI or CD.

Disaster Preparedness Exercise Taking Place on Campus This Week

On April 15, UNK will be the site of a major, community-wide disaster preparedness exercise from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The exercise will limit access to parts of campus, including Lots 9 and 10 (east of the Health and Sports Center and Cushing Coliseum) which will be closed that day. Further, there will be no access to this area from Fine Arts, Health and Sports, Cushing and Otto Olsen. In addition, the eastern section of the Health and Sports Center and its arena will also be closed for the day.

As part of the exercise, the area will be staged to look as if an incident has occurred and will include actors with injuries. Further, emergency service vehicles and others will be using 15th Avenue, University Drive, and Lots 9 and 10 to access the exercise site.  Please be aware traffic conditions will be slowed or delayed during this time so avoid this area if possible.
