Nebraska Writing Center Consortium Opportunity for Statewide Collaboration

UNK hosted 31 writing center enthusiasts from across the state for the Nebraska Writing Center Consortium’s (NWCC) third annual meeting on Friday, September 25, 2009, through the coordination of Amanda Granrud, Director of Academic Success Offices and the Writing Center, and the support of UNK’s Division of Student Life and Dean Gail Zeller. Directors, coordinators, faculty, and tutors from 15 institutions attended the one-day event at the Nebraskan Student Union.

NWCC participants attended two of six breakout sessions: Designing Writing Centers for 21st Century Learning, New Directions for Marketing the Writing Center, Writing Center Startup and Administration, Maximizing Online Tools, Collaborating for Mutual Benefit, and Working with Writers with Disabilities. Several participants noted the importance of dialogue with colleagues. As one participant stated, “I liked learning about different technologies and about what’s going on at the different Nebraska colleges.” Another participant reported, “Conversations during the breakout sessions were revitalizing and touched on truly important issues.”

The keynote address— “What We Need to Know about Working with Second Language Writers: Attitudes, Principles, Strategies and Issues”— was given by Dr. Carol Severino, who directs the Writing Center and Writing Fellows Program at the University of Iowa. Her address offered research-based advice for tutors and teachers regarding best strategies for supporting second language acquisition. UNO Writing Center director, Dori Richards, noted that “the keynote address was excellent and so timely as most of us face ever-growing enrollments of international students who seek our help.”

Several members of the Academic Success Offices, C. T. Ryan Library, and English Language Institute (ELI) also attended Severino’s address. Ann Snider of ELI reported, “I thought her remarks were so helpful for what I do with International Students. I have some great ideas as to how I might better help my students and have a more productive class.” John Turek, also of ELI, stated, “I felt the speaker…touched on all the major considerations in the methodology of teaching writing. To do so in 45 minutes is a daunting task.”

Tanya Cochran, Director of the Writing and Speaking Studio at Union College in Lincoln, will host next year’s NWCC meeting. If interested in participating, contact Amanda Granrud via email at granrudal@unk.edu or phone at 308-865-8728.
