PeopleSoft Information Session Provides Project Updates

The team working on the new PeopleSoft Student Information System project held an informal information session this week on Tuesday, September 1, to detail the progress of the project thus far, as well as to explain expectations for the coming months. The group hopes to hold these information sessions monthly to keep the campus informed of the changes to come. Watch for more information about the next session.

The next phase of the project involves the full implementation of the online application for admission. The Admissions team has been developing and testing this portion of the system, and they will go live on September 14, to begin accepting students through the PeopleSoft system for the Fall of 2010. Graduate Admissions will follow shortly after, going live with their application on October 1.

Consistent with this change in Admissions, the Financial Aid, Finance, and Student Records offices will also transition their services to the PeopleSoft system for the students entering in the Fall of 2010, and the current system (including Bogie, WebEASI, and WebSMART) will no longer be in use after the Summer of 2010.

As you are looking ahead in your work with students, be aware that students applying or registering at UNK through the summer of 2010 will use the current system, but students applying or registering for Fall 2010 or later will use the new PeopleSoft system.

In conjunction with this new student information system, the team has been working on a new portal that will eventually provide access to several software applications with one login – eventually including PeopleSoft, Blackboard, and Firefly. As the portal is developed and completed, the team will provide more information for users.

Visit the SIS Project Information site for updates and more information.

New gateway to library “Databases & E-Resources” launched

Written by Jon Ritterbush, Electronic Resources Librarian
ritterbushjr@unk.edu

The Calvin T. Ryan Library provides access to over 170 article databases and e-resources, which include links to streaming music collections, images, e-book sets, and governmental websites.  With these increasing numbers, the challenge of identifying the best databases in a given subject area has grown more complex.

To help library users more quickly identify the best databases for their research area, the library has recently launched a new “Databases & E-Resources” gateway page under the “Research Tools” menu heading, and directly accessible at http://rosi.unk.edu/search/y.

This new gateway allows users to identify the most useful databases for their specific subject area, as shown below.  It’s no coincidence that this list of subjects closely matches the academic department names and program offerings at UNK!
library1
Each database and e-resource in a subject listing will include an “About Resource” button, which leads to an informational page (see below) which provides:

  1. a link to the database,
  2. links to tutorials and help guides when available,
  3. information about access limits, and
  4. a permanent link to this informational page – click here and note the shortened URL displayed in the browser’s address bar. This URL is perfect for use in a print handout or Blackboard course.

library2
If you are already familiar with a particular library database by name, you can locate it using the alphabetical links on the “Databases & E-Resources” page, as shown below:
library3
Looking for the BioOne database?  Click on the “B” link and you’ll view a list of all databases and e-resource providers starting with that letter, including BioOne. Don’t remember the exact title of the database, but do remember that it’s an EBSCO database? Click on the “E” link and you’ll view cross-references for all 21 EBSCO databases to which UNK subscribes.

Please contact the library if you have any questions or comments about the “Databases & E-Resources” page and the resources to which it links. Faculty who would like to have these resources introduced to their students, please contact your department liaison librarian.

  • Faculty Handbook
In a continuing effort to provide faculty with the most current policy information, the Faculty Handbook has been revised and reorganized. The purpose of the handbook is to gather the documents and policies that inform and guide critical decisions, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (2009-2011).

  • Faculty Senate
To keep faculty informed and in the spirit of shared goverenance, the 2009-2010 Faculty Senate Roster is posted on the Faculty Senate home page. The page also contains links to meeting agendas, meeting minutes of both the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Senate committees, and the Faculty Senate Constitution and Bylaws.
