General Studies Council Votes on New Program Proposal and Invites Faculty to Review

On Tuesday, March 24, 2009, the General Studies Council unanimously approved the proposed new General Studies Program for distribution to the general faculty and campus wide discussion. Faculty are requested to consider the proposed program carefully, discuss it, and offer views and suggestions to the General Studies Council. A list of Frequently Asked Questions was recently added to the General Studies website to provide additional information about the renewal process.

After a period of campus wide discussion of the proposal, the General Studies Council will review all comments and suggestions and make any necessary revisions to the proposal. After that, the proposal will go to the colleges for a vote. The process is outlined in the General Studies Governance document.

Library - In Brief Online

  • Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online (OxRef) provides a wealth of authoritative facts, figures and translations from 175 different titles published by Oxford University Press.   From one search form on the OxRef entry page, users can search dictionaries and encyclopedias in numerous subject areas including the arts, biology, history, literature, philosophy and many other disciplinesOxford Reference Online is available on the Library's Virtual Resources webpage, and is accessible from off-campus with a UNK login and password.

In addition to the valuable and authoritative entries within its database, OxRef also provides cross-references links to other related topics, by which to expand your research scope.  OxRef entries often include helpful bibliographies which cite other books or articles on a given topic.

As with many library databases, each entry in Oxford Reference also contains a citation with a persistent URL, or permalink. By using these permalinks, students can more easily record and cite their research in their assignments, and faculty can embed these links in a Blackboard course or email to students. This persistent URL leads to a short biography of Nebraska author Willa Cather from the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature.

  • SAGE Premier

The Library has recently expanded its access to electronic journals published by SAGE to include over 500 full-text titles, with an extensive backfile dating as far back as 40 years for some titles. These e-journals cover a wide array of topics within business, education, the natural sciences and social sciences.  SAGE Premier is listed on the Library’s Indexes webpage, and is accessible off-campus with a UNK login and password. Users can search the entire SAGE collection or a specific journal from the starting search form. SAGE also allows users to browse articles by topic, by clicking on the “Browse” tab at the top of its search page, and then clicking on “Articles by Discipline.”  Try these links to view articles in area studiescriminology or biochemistry.

  • STAT-USA and USA Trade Online

As a Federal Depository Library, the library has limited free access to two databases produced by the federal government: STAT-USA and USA Trade Online. These would be of particular value to students or faculty in business and international studies.

    • STAT-USA offers an extensive collection of U.S. economic and finance data, international trade statistics, and market research reports.
    • USA Trade Online provides current and cumulative U.S. export and import data on more than 18,000 export commodities and 24,000 import commodities worldwide.

These two databases are listed on the Virtual Resources webpage (under “Business” and “Statistics”), and link to a page with details about access and restrictions. Access Limits:  Per the government's access terms, no more than two simultaneous users may be logged in at the library. Users must be logged in by a library staff member. Access from outside the library or off-campus is not permitted.  To access these databases, please inquire at the Library's Reference Desk during these hours, or in the Library's Government Documents area during normal business hours.

11th Annual Student Research Day Recognizes Excellence in Student and Faculty Research

UNK's 11th Annual Student Research Day took place on Wednesday, March 25. The event is sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, the Research Services Council, and the Undergraduate Research Council, and it is designed to provide students - both undergraduates and graduates, from any discipline - with the opportunity to exhibit the results of their research projects. Faculty mentors are also recognized for their contributions to guiding students through the research process.

This year's day represents the "biggest student participation in recent years" with "very high quality in the opinion of the judges," according to John Falconer, Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Congratulations to the following award winners!
