NCA Focused Visit Positive, with Recommendations for Future

On April 28-29, the review team of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) met with various groups/individuals on campus. The team member evaluating assessment was impressed with all that has been accomplished since 2004. She emphasized the importance for continued progress, to ensure that UNK will be prepared for the next regularly scheduled NCA visit in 2014. She recommended refinement of both the processes and the instruments departments/programs use in assessing student learning outcomes. In October, the Office of Assessment will provide more detailed feedback on assessment reports in order to help refine the process. Other recommendations were made for continuing the process of revising General Studies for more direct assessment of General Studies, as well as WI and CD.  The team is recommending that UNK be required to provide a progress report on General Studies assessment to the HLC in 2011.

During the exit interview, reviewers informed the administration of the recommendations they will make to the HLC, who will review the information and, if in agreement, will issue the outcomes decided upon to UNK.

NCA Team to Recommend Approval for eCampus Request to Expand Online Offerings

During the visit to UNK, the review team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association (NCA) also evaluated the request by UNK to expand online degree offerings. In the exit report, the NCA reviewer noted favorable progress in eCampus since the NCA visit in 2004 and indicated that  they will recommend approval of the accreditation to expand online programs. "The visit went better than expected and we were all pleased with the results," explained Gloria Vavricka, Director of eCampus. If approved by the HLC, "eCampus will be able to collaborate with departments to expand UNK's online degrees and provide more opportunities to those students requesting more online offerings."

Status of General Studies Renewal: Faculty Senate Advances Program Document to GS Council for Consideration

After the Faculty Senate’s review of the proposed changes to the General Studies program, the Senate voted narrowly to forward the document to the General Studies Council. The Council will review the document, as well as other information from other sources, including comments and ideas from the Colleges. The work of the Council will be reported to campus in regular meeting minutes and on the GS website. The Council will look specifically at the strong points of the document and determine what concepts might best suit the students at UNK.

Selection Process Continues for New Student Information System

In mid-April over 120 people from across the University of Nebraska and the State College System attended vendor demonstrations by Oracle and Sungard. Later, four vendors made implementation presentations. Reference checks have also been completed. Over the next three weeks, various groups will submit their final rankings to help determine the best software solution. Participants hope to make a selection by the end of May so that negotiation discussions can begin. Those involved are anxious to move forward to the next phase of the project.

ROTC Returns to UNK

Tomorrow, the Military Science Program will mark the return of Army ROTC to UNK. A UH-60 (Blackhawk) helicopter will land at 10 a.m. on the practice field, just west of COE, carrying ROTC cadre from Lincoln, officials from the Nebraska National Guard, and the UNK ROTC guidon. Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Cisne, Professor of Military Science at UNL, will present the guidon to Chancellor Kristensen who will then pass it to UNK ROTC cadre. The passing of the guidon will be followed by a short question and answer session. UNK Faculty and staff are invited to attend and are asked to gather on the sidewalk south of URS until the helicopter has landed.
