2008 James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs Focuses on “Global Power, War and Inequality in the 21st Century”
The University of Nebraska at Kearney hosts the James E. Smith Midwest Conference on World Affairs every March, bringing speakers from around the world to discuss issues of global significance. Individuals will gather on March 10-11, 2008 to discuss “Global Power, War and Inequality in the 21st Century,” and it will be an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to hear from politicians, foreign ambassadors to the United States, scholars, and artists regarding timely issues such as
“Politics of Tolerance and Ethnic Conflict,”
“Politics, Indigenous Rights and Poetry,”
“Democracy and the War on Terror,”
“Challenges in the Middle-east from an Egyptian Perspective,”
“Foreign Policy Challenges in a Changing Global Scenario,”
“Dealing with Strategic Partners in the Muslim World.”
The conference features two Keynote Addresses: one on Monday night, “The state of the UN and its Future Role,” by Ms. Gillian Sorenson, Senior Advisor & National Advocate for the United Nations Foundation; and one on Tuesday night, "The Politics of the Muslim World," by Vali Nasr, Professor and Associated Chair of Research Department of National Security Affairs Naval Postgraduate School. In addition, students have opportunity to take a delegate to lunch on Tuesday, March 11. Contact Barbara Amundson at amundsonb@unk.edu to make arrangements. UNK to Host No Limits Annual Conference
To provide a forum for the discussion of women’s and gender-related issues, the Women’s and Gender Studies Programs at UNK, UNL, and UNO have sponsored the No Limits Conference for undergraduate and graduate student research since 2002. This year’s conference, “No Limits 2008: Transnational Feminism,” will be hosted by UNK on February 29 through March 1. The program includes the Keynote Address, “Transnational Feminist Studies: Problems and Possibilities,” by Dr. Inderpal Grewal, author of Transnational America: Feminisms, Diasporas, Neoliberalisms and professor of Women’s Studies and the Program in Culture and Theory at the University of California, Irvine. Lauren Pelon, International Instrumentalist, will provide a musical performance, “Women in Music: Someone Will Remember Us,” and a faculty roundtable will be conducted on the topic of Transnational Feminist Methodologies. For more information, visit the conference website at

Division Prepares Operations Plan in the Event of Flu Pandemic
As the nation faces the possibility of a pandemic due to the mutation of the H5N1 virus, which causes “bird flu,” the division of Academic Affairs and Student Life has been developing a plan of action for the campus. If the pandemic was established in Nebraska, the UNK campus would be significantly affected and more than likely closed. A draft of the division’s Plan for Management of Avian Influenza Pandemic was completed in January and forwarded to the Faculty Senate for review at their February meeting. The plan describes the proposal for campus operations to function in the event of a closure.
