Counseling and School Psychology Graduate Program Assessment Report 2004: Comprehensive Exams

Submitted Fall, 2004

Comprehensive Exams: All students are required to successfully complete comprehensive exams during the final semester of their program. The comprehensive exam is based on the learning objectives. Multiple evaluators assess the student using the Comprehensive Exam Assessment Form.

Assessment - Comprehensive Exams:
Total = 31

School Counseling    n = 16   x = 3.2    (1 - 5 scale, 5 = exemplary)
Community Counseling  n = 9   x = 4.2    (1 - 5 scale 5 = pass)
School Psychology    n = 5   x = 4.65    (1 - 5 scale, 5 = exceptional)

The school counseling rating fell between "adequate" and "more than adequate."
The school psychology rating fell near "exceptional."

Interpretation and Recommendations:

The results indicate that students are successfully completing comprehensive examinations and that the "standardized" assessment rubric is useful in this evaluation process. There is a continuing need to refine this rubric to more accurately reflect the quality of the response. The rubrics for school and community counseling need to be similar, if they are to be compared. There is on-going support from the Department to continue to use this item.
