Music Graduate Program Assessment Plan

Admission Requirements/Evaluation

In 2005, the graduate music program developed a tool to serve as a baseline examination of the level of student preparedness for the program at the time of application.  The tool is administered and recorded in two segments:  1) Admission Requirements including application, undergraduate degree completion, transcript submission, undergraduate GPA, and letters of recommendation and 2) Entrance Evaluations of a Portfolio (Philosophy of Teaching, Sample Programs, Examples of Organizational, Philosophical, Research or Performance Experience), a Video Tape (Classroom Teaching and/or Rehearsal/Conducting), a Performance Audition, and the Graduate Music Entrance Exam.

Classroom Teaching

All graduate students will be assessed the areas of classroom management and teaching, and ensemble conducting and will submit video taped components of teaching skills that will be assessed by a two members of the student's faculty committee. The assessment will be based on the Music Classroom Teaching Evaluation Form and the Graduate Level Conducting Evaluation Form.

Comprehensive Examinations

All graduate students in music will take a series of comprehensive examinations developed by each student's faculty committee. Individual committees are composed of the student's advisor and faculty representatives in the areas of Pedagogy, Content Specialization and Research. The comprehensive exam will be administered at the end of his/her program of study covering information studied in the areas of education/music education, music theory, music history and general/elective considerations. Members of the student's graduate faculty committee will evaluate each part of the exam using Graduate Comprehensive Examinations Evaluation Form.

Final Interview

Upon completion of a student's comprehensive examinations, three members of the music graduate faculty will meet with the student in a final interview to discuss and assess the broad spectrum of knowledge, skills and values gained by the student during the course of study in music. Students' responses are evaluated using the Graduate Final Interview Evaluation Form.
