Math 460 WI, Advanced Calculus is a writing intensive course required on every undergraduate mathematics major option that is offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, including the education Endorsement programs. This course is offered each year and represents the final course in a 21 sequential chain of courses, the first 18 hours of which are prerequisites for Math 460 WI.
Accordingly, the faculty of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics have identified a body of knowledge that students should acquire from the prerequisites for Math 460 that is important to student success in Math 460.
An assessment pre-test and an assessment test, developed by a committee consisting of four faculty members of the Department not including the instructor, are administered to students enrolled in Math 460. The pre-test is administered by one of the members of the committee during the first two weeks of the semester to determine if the prerequisite courses leading up to Math 460 are doing the job that they purport to do. The assessment test is also administered by a member of the committee to the same group of students enrolled in Math 460 at the end of the semester.
The results are analyzed and discussed by the committee who prepares a written report to submitted to the Department for discussion. Based on the recommendations of the Department, revisions on the tests, the prerequisite courses, and of the course itself are made as needed.

Indirect Measures
Each student majoring in mathematics education completes a written exit interview for the purpose of assessing his/her learning progress. This exit survey provides the Department with information regarding the student growth and progress toward achieving the students learning objectives 1i, 1ii, 1iii, 1iv, 1v, 1vi, 1vii, 1viii, 2i-2xii, and 3. Results of the survey are reviewed by the Department and used to set short and long term goals. The exit survey is administered to all mathematics education majors by the College of Education at the end of the student's student teaching experience. Results of the survey are recorded and by the College of Education and a copy is provided to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for discussion and for the purpose of improvement of the Department's programs of study.
Every four to six years<--end change-->, the Department sends out an assessment instrument to individuals who graduated from any of our programs either four, or fiveor six years previously. The purpose of this assessment is to elicit meaningful observations from the past graduates of our programs of study relative to how their respective programs met the demands of their chosen pursuits in the four to six years time period following their graduation.
