Direct Measures
Assessments using the mandatory test will be done based on a percentage of questions answered correctly. The initial test was adopted from the same test used at UNL and UNO and slightly modified with question content to reflect our required courses as in comparison with their required courses. This exam will be periodically reviewed and updated as deemed appropriate by departmental faculty when discussing the assessment process.

The assessment of students by external (off campus) experts when students do their internships has been an ongoing process since the early 1980s at UNK. The current evaluation sheet was changed in the summer of 2001 to reflect the same criteria that students at UNL and UNO are graded on. Results are kept by the Department Chairperson. Averages by year will be maintained on selected internship questions that measure above goals.
Indirect Measure
The alumni surveys have been an ongoing assessment since the early 1980s at UNK. It had been determined to have them sent out every 5 years to obtain feedback from those who had graduated during that time. It was felt that to do so more often would result in a lower return rate by alumni.
Assessment of the Assessment Process
The Criminal Justice Department faculty will review the results obtained from the above assessment on a yearly basis. At that time they will reach a consensus about continuing or modifying the assessment tools used. They will determine whether the current means of assessing is actually assessing those outcomes that is valuable to the improvement of the departmental offerings. The assessment cycle will also be discussed. Currently the alumni surveys are done every 5 years and the mandatory test is being given every fall and spring semester. The results will be discussed and if changes are needed for continued improvement they will be implemented.
