Measure

Speech Presentations

Until spring 2008 when the department's new capstone course is offered for the first time, students in upper division core courses Speech 456 and Speech 499 will be the focus of the unit's assessment in the area of Speech. These two classes will allow the department to make contact with graduating Speech majors. These students will be administered the indirect measure of undergraduate perceptions. These same people will be required to develop presentations which will be evaluated using the appropriate direct measure of undergraduate competencies.

Portfolio Reviews

All mass communications upperclassmen are required to produce a portfolio prior to graduation. As such, 20 - 25 portfolios are evaluated each semester by at least two Communication faculty or invited persons. Portfolios should constitute evidence of achievement particular to the student's chosen career field in advertising, broadcasting, mass media, news-editorial, public relations or sports communication. Evidence can include projects or papers completed: for on or off campus media; for competitions; internships; for other academic institutions in the area of Mass Communications or; for UNK mass communications courses. The appropriate direct measure of undergraduate competencies will be used to evaluate the portfolios produced by the students. Once the unit's capstone course is offered for the first time in spring 2008, completion of the portfolio will be a requirement for the course.
