Goals

  1. Upon completing the course work for a Physics/Physical Sciences degree, students will have developed the ability to critically evaluate and solve problems through the application of appropriate physical principles.
  2. Physics/Physical Sciences graduates will be able to coherently organize and present information through written and oral presentation.
  3. Physics/Physical Sciences graduates will have the necessary skills and knowledge to acquire entry-level positions in the field (including industry and high school teaching) or for admission to their graduate or professional schools of choice.

Outcomes

For each of the three Goals in our Mission Statement, there are specific student outcomes expected.

Goal 1

  1. Students will evaluate the credibility of sources of information and opinions.
  2. Students will critically evaluate competing ideas as applicable to their fields of study.
  3. Students will develop conclusions from credible evidence and defend those conclusions.

Goal 2

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method.
  2. Students will understand major research designs, their applications and limitations.
  3. Students will understand and apply basic measurement techniques.
  4. Students will apply research methods in formal projects.
  5. Students will make well-organized presentations of information to local and national groups.
  6. Students will write using appropriate spelling, grammar, and discipline-specific terminology.

Goal 3

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the main fields of physics (Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and quantum mechanics).
  2. Students will demonstrate a professional attitude toward classmates and research colleagues.
  3. Students will participate in professional activities and organizations.
