International Studies Program Assessment Mission

Mission

Students who graduate with a major in International Studies will demonstrate the skills necessary to deal with the international events that directly affect their lives and to learn the skills necessary to enable them to be successful in a rapidly changing world. Students who complete the program in International Studies will:

  1. Be prepared for entry-level positions in a wide variety of international professional careers, from global business, law, and government to public policy jobs relating to health, education, and the environment by being aware of the opportunities that exist and possessing the skills necessary to be successful in the position.
  2. Be able to define what a global society is and be able to articulate what it means.
  3. Be able to explain the concept of interrelatedness.
  4. Be able to use the critical knowledge of cultures to operate successfully in the global community.
  5. Value cultures and be sensitive to cultures other than the student's own.
  6. Be curious about the variety of cultures and peoples on the earth.
  7. Understand that all cultures have certain biases and be able to identify cultural bias.
  8. Be able to converse with a native speaker on various topics from conversations about everyday events to more detailed conversations on world events.

Knowledge

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of jobs available for International Studies majors and knowledge of the required skills for the job. (Mission Statement 1)
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of culture and how it manifests itself in the world. (Mission Statements 4, 5, 6)

Skills

  1. Define what a global society is and how it works. Be able to articulate the pros and cons of a global society and how one participates in that society. (Mission Statements 2,4,6)
  2. Explain the concept of interrelatedness in the areas of culture, economics, politics, health, law and the environment. (Mission Statement 3).
  3. Carry on a conversation on a general topic in a second language. (Mission Statement 8)
  4. Read written material for cultural bias. (Mission Statement 7)

Values

  1. Demonstrate a curiosity for and interest in people from another culture. (Mission Statement 6)
  2. Demonstrate tolerance and appreciation for differences wherever students may encounter them in daily life. (Mission Statement 5, 6)
