Dr. Chapman Rackaway, Fort Hays State University

The American Democracy Project for Civic Engagement is a national, multi-campus initiative that seeks to foster informed civic engagement in the United States. In this presentation, Fort Hays State University professor and campus ADP coordinator Dr. Chapman Rackaway explains why starting a campus ADP program is beneficial for students, faculty, staff, and administration. Using ADP as an umbrella for civic engagement activities provides a branding opportunity for universities as well as methods of publicizing and programming civic engagement activities. Beyond the benefits of a dedicated civic engagement program, Professor Rackaway will share best practices from his and other universities in creating their own ADP branches on campus. Smart design can create an ADP chapter that maximizes engagement among students, provides research and pedagogical opportunities for faculty, and provides excellent measures of student learning outcomes.
