Biology 420 Capstone Project Evaluation

The performance is tendered in a research symposium format, with faculty being given the following Instructions re. evaluation in the areas of:

  1. Introduction:  Was the problem put into perspective (e.g., why was it important to perform this
project, and how does it relate to past work that was done in the same area?)   What was the purpose of the study (i.e., what objective(s) or hypothesis(es) were being tested?)

  2. Methods and Materials:  Were these clearly laid out?  Did the student spend too little time on this area, just enough time or too much time?   This area is often given far too much of the allotted time.

  3. Results:  Were all the relevant results shown in a clear way?  Sometimes a lot of irrelevant data
are thrown in, and sometimes important statistical data are ignored or glossed over.

  4. Tables and Illustrations:  Oral presentations need to be far more visual than a poster or paper.
Were enough illustrations (pictures and graphs) shown?  Were tables easily read and followed, or
They too cluttered?  Did tables include superfluous data?

  5. Discussion:  Did the presenter compare their results to previous work found in the literature?
    Were the results adequately explained?
