Special Education: Gifted Identification Checklist

Identification Checklist (80 points) 

Directions:  Develop a multi-level set of procedures for identifying children who need differentiation or special programs resulting from specific skill strengths. Be sure to include procedures for finding students who may not be recognized in the regular classroom. Your identification plan must be multidimensional and inclusive at each level. Although small schools/ districts may only need the screening and placement levels on a regular basis; however, they too need to have developed the identification level.

Screening procedures fordeveloping talent pool that reflects district demographics (25 pts) 

  1. At least 2 assessment methods (must fit available services) (10 pts)
    1. Name specific tests or methods, e.g., CAT test subscores (language arts, math analysis, etc.), a particular checklist, nonverbal screening test, skill demonstration, portfolio, etc.
    2. Identify qualifying score ranges for each assessment (5 pts) 
     
  2. Describe what populations will be found and missed (5 pts) 
  3. Provide rationale for use of each method (5 pts) 

Multidimensional identification procedures (20 pts) 

  1. Multiple assessment methods (10 pts)
    1. Name specific tests or methods, e.g., individual reading comprehension test, IQ test, cognitive abilities test, performance evaluated by professionals in field, portfolio, case study with components, etc.
     
  2. Describe what populations will be found and missed (5 pts) 
  3. Provide rationale for use of each method (5 pts) 

Placement decision-making and notification (35 pts) 

  1. Process and criteria for making placement decisions (10 pts)
    1. Rational for use should demonstrate efforts to be inclusive and equitable (10 pts) 
     
  2. Materials for parents/guardians (10 pts)
    1. Explanation of process, permission to test, acceptance/rejection notification, appeals process 
     
  3. Specify the kind(s) of giftedness will you be identifying, e.g., math achievement, intellectual, artistic. (For TESE 826, be sure this agrees with your needs assessment and is consistent with your definition.) (5 pts)
