CURRICULUM CRITERIA CHECKLIST (100 points) 

Criteria for evaluation:  Appropriate challenge level for gifted learners, integration of all elements, age appropriateness, covers one academic year for two grade levels, logical progression through the grades.

  1. Description of students and program option for which the curriculum is designed.  (5 pts)

    Include size of school, grade levels covered, size of classes, format of program (heterogeneous class, cluster group, pull-out, special class), program model(s), type of giftedness being served (intellectually, academically, creatively, or artistically), socioeconomic status, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and any other information that you consider relevant to your program.

  2. Organization (40 points)
    • Philosophy – describe philosophy of gifted education into which this curriculum will fit (4 pts) 
    • Generalizations/principles– list three to five. Explain how they will guide instruction. Show links to instruction in the objectives or activities. (6 pts) 
    • Conceptual themes – describe your central organizing theme and any supporting themes with your rationale for their selection.  Show links to instruction in the objectives or activities (4 pts)  
    • Curriculum models – describe two or more theoretical models that provide structure for your curriculum and your rationale for their selection (4 pts) 
    • Web organizer – using your conceptual theme(s) as the hub, show the main content of your overall curriculum keyed to content areas (the arts, language arts, math, science, social studies) (10 pts) 
    • Scope and sequence – provide a chart or other organizer that shows the sequence of instruction over two consecutive grade levels linked to your generalizations/principles with content area specified (12 pts)
       
       
     
  3. Curriculum outline (45 points)
    • Goal statements – include at least 2 goals each for content, process, and product, and at least one goal each for affective, social, ethical, and multicultural understanding.  These should be broad enough to apply to at least your two grade levels. (10 pts) 
    • Major objectives for each goal – list at least 2 under each goal for each grade level. Demonstrate instructional connection to the concept(s) and generalization(s) in as many objectives as possible (or within the activities) (10 pts) 
    • Sample activities for each major objective – list at least 2 under each objective Demonstrate instructional connection to the concept(s) and generalization(s) in as many objectives as possible (or within the objectives) (10 pts) 
    • Resources/materials for teachers – provide a beginning list of examples you would use (5 pts) 
    • Evaluation methods – provide a beginning list of methods you would use with an example of the activity for which each method would be used (5 pts) 
    • Justification of differentiation strategies – how will your curriculum ensure challenge for gifted learners? Indicate if this is an original or modified curriculum. (5 pts)
       
       
     
  4. Presentation (10 points)
    • 10-15 minute presentation of the main elements of your curriculum.  Include your reflections on what you learned about gifted learners during its development (10 pts)
